Where is my power???
Where is my power???
First off, I wanna say Im not here to talk about service/tuning, just trying to figure out WTF is goin on w/ my car?.?.? looking for some help narrowing it down, from the Evo Fam.
Now I changed plugs, payed for a BL test (but wasnt present during the test)... oil swapped (asked to have the tranny fluid done, but didnt get done)
all in trying to make sure my car was ready for some power...
So I recently had a new turbo installed, BBK-B w/ a MAP o2 housing (recirc./coated) and RC 1000's installed and tuned, and here were the final results...

Not cool!
Things I noticed: and this quite puzzling, is the car was only seeing 240 load (raw) I was seeing 280 load (temp+baro) w/ the stock turbo. OBVIOUSLY somethin is NOT right! Payed for a BL test, so... Possible issues w/ the MAF?
The car feels like its cramming the engine w/ air and unable to ingest it all, or theres a major leak somewhere... IDK Yes, I know I need cams! lol but still dont think this feeling is normal... Doesnt sound/feel like surge, but feeling stops after peak tq, and then feels like it should (motor ingesting it all). (hope that makes sense) I know its a larger stock frame, but shouldnt be having this issue.
They put in Redline 15w-50 oil. Isnt this a bit thick? especially for winter, and a daily driver, w/ stock motor? Doubt this has any relevance to power, just looking for confirmation whether I should swap it out?
Checked the coolant reservoir, and was damn near empty. (supposedly was swapped out) dont know if theres any relevance, there. (since filled it)
After spending some time tighteneing up ALL of the clamps, tightening the BOV, and re-tuning it, on the street (w/ the wheels on obviously) and this is what Im working w/ now... Now Im seeing 280 load (raw) wanna go back to compensated load tho...

Now I know, first thing thats gonna be said, is "I need cams", I know this, and are next on the list, but still feel like the car is down a ton of power, and thinking its something part/install/leak related, IDK...
I feel like I should be ~ 420 ish on 91, and dont think this is unreasonable, considering the #'s that are being put down on Chads MD.
Mod list:
BBK-B, MAP o2 (recirc.), GM 3-Port, full Injen intake kit, Ets 3.5" intercooler, 65mm TB w/ mani. port match, APS BOV, Works 70mm DP, Mil.Spec 100 cell, Jun B.L. Cat Back, Walbro 255 FP, RC 1000's.
Gonna make another trip, to another shop, to help me figure it out, but thought I would ask the Evo Fam. first, as it might not be till after the holidays, and could use all of the insight I can get...
TIA

Have you tried doing a boost leak test? Imo throwing more aftermarket parts is probably not what I would recommend. Hold off on the cams until you know its not some faulty part or boost leak. Faulty pcv valve is another thing to consider.
numbers seem about right to me. Your stock turbo only made 325/315 and if im reading that correctly with the bbk you made 375/321. Thats a 50 hp jump with a turbo. The dyno your on seems to read pretty low. My IX made 375/371 @ 28psi on stock turbo with full bolt ons. Stock long block, no cams here either.
Now i have never liked the bbk turbos, but some people have had succes with them. I would check for a boost leak or maybe do a commpression test.

BBK turbos are in my opinion good turbos. I have a bbk full with 950cc injectors upper lower intercooler piping ams intercooler and full 3' greddy exhaust and I made 385 tuned by Ivey. Stock block and no cams either. My tune was conservative not aggressive. There's something wrong. The bbk b's are known for making way more power than what your making. Get a second opinion on tuning if all other things fail.

Now when when Chad is throwing down 460 on his MD (w/ cams and int. mani.) I would think I should be @least ~ 420 (Dynojet #'s) w. my mods. I know he has better gas out there, but cmon now... And this is a BBK-B, not the full.
I know there is room for improvement on the tune, as its fairly rich (starter map). Right now this turbo is +30-40whp /-10-15 tq compared to stock... Does that sound right to any of you???
Now NOT saying there is an issue w/ the turbo (altho, anything is possible) But what I am saying is theres something wrong w/ my CAR, help me come up w/ possibilities for this loss of power, so when I do get to the shop, I can give ideas, and not just depend on the shop to figure it out. (obviously not having luck w/ finding knowledgable ppl to work on my car) Like, could it possibly have somethin to do w/ the motor internals? I did pull the intake and check the turbine for shaft play, and there was zero, and spun freely!
Once tuned, I never even see my knock cell, and drive like an adult, so motor should be fine... <fingers crossed>
The first thing on my list is a BL test, but like I said, this was supposedly done already... Gonna do a compression test as well.
The only real issue Ive had w/ the car (until now) was, had a coilpack go out on me a while back (swapped out) and had a sender wire on the fuel pump housing pull out a bit. Now I dont think either of these has anything to do w/ it, just pointing out my car has been mechanically sound up to this point! And, the only thing that doesnt feel right is the feeling of the engine not able to take in all the airflow (choking)... (doesnt feel like surge) Thats the only thing I have to go on. What is the cause for this, and is this normal??? Do ppl w/ blacks and reds (w/ out cams) have this feeling??? I havent found any kind of complaints like this...
I was getting a re-occuring p0240 (or was it p0420) lol , so maybe my HFC(mil-spec 100cell) is/or is getting clogged??? Didnt get the cell till recently, and had it for a while... Turned off via tephra.
Obviously, Im not exactly mechanically inclined, so need some ideas...

I have seen the 100cell cat get clogged before. take it out and seel if you can see through it and/or replace it with a test pipe and see if there is any difference. Also what numebrs are you actually seeing. I didn't see you post anything

While I was there in the beggining of the turbo install, I asked about this, and he blew (w/ his mouth) into the cat, and I felt air thru the exhaust. Can u still feel a swoosh of air from some1's mouth, thru the exhaust if it was clogged?
My only guesses, are BL/'s, MAF issue or clogged cat... or possibly somethin w/ the motor...
I would try this after the boost leak test. I've had a stock Mustang Cobra come in to the shop with abnormally high boost #'s and the car barely got out of its own way. Turns out two cats were clogged.
The VD graph, under the dyno graph in post #1 is where Im actually @, right now. avg. ~ 365/325 dynojet settings.

As for feeling air through the cat when clogged, we didn't try it. We took it out and looked into and noticed that it was severly clogged and there was almost no light visible through it. I suppose that there wouldn't be much volume/pressure air trying get though just from ones breath so it's possible that that amount of air could pass through even with a restriction.
I have an appt. next week w/ Reese, so hopefully we can get the car running right. <fingers crossed>
First thing Im gonna do, is swap out that oil. When I told him what oil was in there, James asked me, "What? Why? Youre still on the stock motor, right?" lol
So gonna try and pick up some AO 10w-40.
Heres my list:
change oil.
Boost Leak test / check all vac. lines / EGR block off plate.
plugs/coilpacks (Wouldnt be surprised if the plugs they installed needed to be gapped properly, and or a coilpack is givin up the ghost)
check the 100 cell (pull it off and properly check it.)
and check the MAF.
Doubt its the MAF, but was only seeing 240 load on the dyno, so thought *maybe* its somethin w/ the MAF, but have since gotten load to come up to 280 (still low), so maybe not...
thanks for the advice, guys! Im going crazy trying to figure out any/all posibilities, before I head down to the shop. Even w/ the Christmas tomorrow, Its all I can think about...

If you don't have a boost leak, I 100% GUARANTEE it's your oil - it is TOO THICK for stock block . I did back to back tests with M1 15-50 and M1 10w-30 and gained a ton of power (you can search my posts for before and after dynos).
I was lookin @ the reciept (in detail) , when I got home and was like WTF, 15w-50??? Started researching it, and sure enough, TOO thick for the clearances in the stock motor...
Not 1 single thing that was done by that shop was done correctly, including putting in the wrong oil, leaking injector seal(less than a week after install), o2 housing/DP connection was leaking, all of the clamps were loose, the tuner was 45 mins. late, and tune was even worse. I could actually keep going, but u get the point...
I bet if I pull my plugs, they will need to be gapped properly.
Its amazing how ppl still stand by this shop... Once I get my car running right again, gonna do a before and after review.
Just a suggestion
For approx 1/2 the cost of attempting another dyno tune, I would recommend the Looney Tune vendor to take a peek at the values adjusted in the ECU
Maybe you've used him before. I have had 3 separate solid tunes by him over the past 2.5 years
BTW, my last tune 2 weeks ago produced 407/400 on E85 (Stock cams / stock turbo)
Peace
