Launching the Evo

I have a Evo 9 MR and the launch control is set at 5500 rpm. I dont want to break the transfer case because this is my DD, so if i launch at 3k rpm instead will it hurt anything?

It's all in your clutch management from what I have gathered in launching my 8. Only did that two or three times in the four years I had it though. Someone with more experience will chime in. Good luck and don't break anything.

Preload the drivetrain and learn how to have some mechanical sympathy and you'll be fine.

Slip the clutch, don't dump it and you'll be fine. 3k is too low.

these guys are really giving you bad advice... i've had my evo since jun 06 and i have 500+ launches on a completely stock drivetrain at 5k and 6k... with the stock clutch and an exedy twin carbon. i've nevre broken or damaged anything other then blown my clutch but can you really blame them after all the abuse... anyway. i have launched by hitting the 2 step and dumping the clutch and i have slipped it so it would build more boost and smoked the clutch unless youre running slicks you arent gonna grip enough to break anything. and yes i DD my evo as well... when you get off the tarck and smell that horrible odor that makes you wanna vomit you'll learn to not slip the clutch anymore.

Preloading the drivetrain is always a good idea. Just seems to make it seem smoother and less destructive for some reason.. I may be retarded.. who knows. LOL

Preload the drive train. Slip the clutch and pull your ebrake up. When you ready to launch just release the ebrake and let the clutch out.

I'm interested in your comments, but they're very hard to read and understand. Are you saying to dump the clutch, as one hits the 2-step?

Dont dump the clutch. Better off to burn the clutch then to break something down the drivetrain

forgive me... i was was saying i've done it both ways slipped the clutch and dumped it. when you slip the clutch you burn the clutch disc and it smells horrible. it also burns and glazes the flywheel bit by bit. that really reduces clutch life. my first clutch lasted 1800 miles because i slipped the clutch. i changed to a twin carbon and it lasted 20k of extreme driving and track abuse. i swapped back to stock now and its gone over 20k launching by dumping the clutch. and its still holding tight and i'm going to the track tomorrow for more fun.

this is what i do on the track... rev the motor til i engage the two step at 6k... build 6psi now... -1kpa stock... the light drops... i release the clutch and go like hell... my 60ft is 1.7-1.72 on street tires on a non prepped track. no leaks cracks broken anything for 3yrs 6 months... damn... 4yrs 6mons. FML i cant add

the stock slave cylinder has a restrictor pill in it and wont allow the clutch to just engage to fast... its a slow process so you're actually slipping the clutch anyway. you may have notice the clutch pedal engagement point of your clutch changes from time to time. thats the pill... it was mitsubishi's way to keep people from ripping the tranny out the car doing launches...

why the need in using the ebrake? if he's launching it then probably its on a level surface such as at the drag strip

OP, dont waste your time launching at 3000 because its going to accomplish absolutely nothing good for you as far as track times go. If you are so worried about breaking the drivetrain then you really should not be launching the car in the first place

hold the ebrake up hen your preloading the tranny cuz the car will want to move forward since the clutch is tech engaged that way hen you drop the ebrake everything is already in motion... rough of the trans tho
