60-65k Maintenance

Mods sorry if this isn't in the correct location. So I took my car to Fitzgerald Mitsubishi in Maryland for the 60-65k service. They charged $1500...32k miles later I take my car to a good friend/mechanic (has lots of experience with the 4G63 and has built and owns 8sec talons). So I take my car to my buddy for head studs turbo and a few other things to be installed. He recommends doing the Timing belt, balance belt, pulleys and tensioner since I can get it all in a kit. So I get a call later saying the car is done and it looks like mitsu had only replaced the timing belt and serpentine belt. the balance belt looked to be on its last legs and the timing belt was off a tooth... Thanks Mitsu!!
Thanks for the time everyone...just had to rage a bit.

huh when i did the head gasket in my 05 with 25k miles i did everything since i already had it pulled apart and to my surprise the oem water pump was already leaking i thought that was kinda odd for only 25k miles

The balance belt is probably the reason for the 60k interval since it is thinner than the timing belt and seems to degrade quicker. And it was a tooth off is really lame. Just one more reason to DIY or go to a shop that you trust.

Should've taken your car to your friend in the first place. We know more about these cars than any dealership mechanic ever will.

I never trust dealers I tend to do everything on my car myself and feel 100% safer about it

you're supposed to do the spark plugs, and drivetrain fluids at 60k as well.

And coolant hoses - nobody does coolant hoses. Then they post here asking, "Has this ever happened to anybody else?" when one pops.

Well i've got 176,000 miles on my IX MR and have never touched a coolant hose...soooooo

do a visible/physical inspection of the hoses. if they are still plyable and have no leaks, or cracks there's no reason to change them.

I changed my coolant hoses at 60K. The two main hoses to the radiator appeared to be in fine shape. The four smaller hoses that go to the throttle body and turbo were not. They were getting gooey inside and left rubber on the fittings. The heater hoses were not perfect but less damaged.

Now, my Evo is an '03 so it is one of the older cars. But, as I write this the car still has only 73K on it. Maybe time as well as mileage wears out hoses. Anyway, the Service Manual says 60K for hoses and I continue to think that that is good advice. Lose a hose and maybe warp the head – an expensive repair, while a complete hose replacement is not much more than 100 bux – cheap insurance.

That is what happens when you go with a stealership. I usually have a local shop I am close with do all of my work as the dealer charges 100X more and many of their mechanics are 20 year olds that are just an apprentice. Local shops can get all the OEM Mitsubishi parts at basically the same cost as the dealers.

I would just have it done over again and replace your water pump all in one shot.

I've actually broke 1 oem balence belt good thing the crank angle sensor went out to stop the car lol. And recently when I blew my stock bottom end, I shredded a greddy kelvar balance belt! BTW the numbers(low reading mustang dyno) in my signature was probably what caused it haha. Any way when my 2.1L comes in from MAP I'll never have to use that dang thing again! bye bye balence belt!

Anyways, that sucks that the stealership did that to you. Thats why I like quality performance shops and they could have probably done the actual job and way better for cheaper!

I have 116,000 on my '03 and all of the coolant hoses, even the ones at the throttle body, are still in really great shape. I'm gonna change the main 2 hoses soon, mainly for aesthetic purposes though, my engine bay needs some color.
