Can I just remove the Balance Shaft Belt

So I have tried the search and I was unable to locate a valid answer.

On my 91 galant, on my first motor I simply removed the belt and just put the timing belt cover back on the car and called it good. So the question is I am about to do the timing belt on the evo and I do not care about the balance shafts, however I am not ready to pull the oil pump off the car to do the full BSE kit. So I would like ot just remove the belt and go from there.

Technically, yes you can just take the belt off.

I am not sure of the procedure, but I'm pretty sure it involves having to line up the balance shafts in a certain way before taking the belt off.

If it was that easy why do they make Balance shaft delete kits? If that's the case I'm just going to sell my delete kit and just leave the belt off.

Because it is not the proper way to do it.

However, with that said, yes you can just remove the belt without using the delete kit.

One of the balance shafts is belt driven, while the other is gear driven right off of the oil pump assembly. So removing one will cause added vibration, however you will still have one balance shaft in the car (the one that is connected to the oil pump). The proper way is to remove the front case and use the delete kit.

No you cant not. theres 2 shafts, one connected to the oil pump and a nother on the other side of the engine. if you take the belt off it will shake your kidneys off because of the one on the oil pump. You should take both off.

On one of my dsm's, the balance shaft belt broke while driving. When I took the timing cover off, I noticed the belt was broken and did not replace it. I left the balance shafts in the car but just did not put on a new belt.

No there werent any severe vibrations like the other member stated. The only thing i noticed is a slight vibration at around 2.5k rpm. Nothing drastic.

Needless to say, I drove like this for at least 30k miles with no problems whatsoever.

Again, this isnt the right way to do it, but honestly, id do it again.

I just wouldnt recommend it on a high hp engine Like the EVO. The weakest thing on the 4g63 is the balance shaft bearings. Specialy the one behind the oil pump because that one only has one bearing, the other one is supported by two. I would leave them alone or take them off. Just my opinion.

I've seen more engines let go because of this bearings than any other issue. If that bearing starve or gulls up and let's go, there goes your oil pump. Again. IMO let them be or remove them completely and instal delete kits.

If your going to do something do it right, like posted above removing just the belt is a bad idea seeing as the other shaft is still in play. But my question is why do you want to remove the belt, just because your doing the timing belt? Just spend the $10 for a new BS belt and call it good, most of the time you dont do a BSE unless your rebuilding the motor or something that involves you to remove the front cover. Thats just my experience, when i did my timing belt years 2 years ago i left the BS alone, I just rebuilt my motor 2000 miles ago and when i did that i did the BSE.

So it sounds like the evo is just like an old school 4g63. The oil pump is driven from the timing belt. So there would be 0 oiling issues related to removing the belt. The only thing would be the slight vibration at idle which the balance shafts are supposed to clean up.

From a purest standpoint this is a ghetto way to do it. However has no affect on performance/relibility of the motor.

The hard part about doing it the correct way, wich involves the BSE kit, is that RRE recommends that you do this while the motor is out of the car, and just because you have the timing belt off they say that you are only half way there if you do the BSE also. So I do not want to pull the oil pump off the car in order to do the BSE.

My main reason for doing this is just to avoid having the belt fail and killing my motor. When I go built motor the BSE kit will go in.

Also the evo has 115k on it, and the belts have never been done. None of them. I picked up the car used so I am just doing the stuff that the other owner(s) should have done.

Also forgot to mention. The car is on an AEM EMS, and I am going to install the Triggerdisk. This does not have the previsions to support the balance shaft belt.

i used to do it in my 2g dsm, but when i tried it in my evo when i first got it, it was pretty bad in vibration.. so id advice against it on the evo.... unless my engine was just **** poor out of balance from factory lol..

but when i did it on my 2g dsm back in the day there was no noticeable difference at all in vibration.. but i remember trying it in my 1g dsm also and it was like the evo with bad vibration enough to shake steering wheel. so i guess it depends on car and how stiff mounts are, engine balancing , etc
