Shift

I like a 5th to 3rd downshift when I need to beat a yellow streetlight.

Don't skip gears when you upshift. It makes the synchros work harder, and will wear them out faster.

Sometimes downshifting from 5th to 1st works well.

Why, what's the difference? I myself don't jam gears when skipping gears, you still have to wait for the syncros to take in the next gear (via rev matching or time), and yes it takes longer than normal. Been doing this for years, never grind, never have problems with my trannies. Skipping gears is all about keeping the rev's low for better city mpg, nothing else.

There is a bigger speed difference between the input shaft and the secondary shaft in the transmission when you skip a gear. With the clutch disengaged, the input shaft won't slow down appreciably when you shift. That causes more wear than if you row.

The best is when you shift from 3rd to the R gear which stands for "RACE"..

**** hits the fan, then..

Better yet...

What the hell do you even NEED a clutch for??!

I shift WITHOUT USING IT!!!

(Try this, your gear matching abilities will improve greatly..)

I don't use the transmission. I just make sure the car is always pointed downhill so I can coast. So far best mpg is 312.47 but that was with a following breeze. YMMV.
