Hey everyone,

I've had my Evo VIII for a little over a year now and I started getting this weird idle about a few months ago... ok here is the story

One day i fell asleep listening to music with the key ignition on the "on" possition. The car wasn't running and the battery died. I jumped the car with jumper cables and I pulled a "crank sensor code." I didn't think to much of it because the car was running fine. I cleared that code and I have not seen it since. About a month down the road the car was running PERFECT! UNTIL!!!! I pulled a "CEL code" I figured it was just my tune so I got a retune and the car still had the problem. The tuner didn't edit my map so the the CEL wouldn't come one, but i still dont think the CEL code was my idle problem. My friend suggested putting a high flow 3' cat and a spacer for the rear o2. So i installed them! I cleared the CEL code and I still haven't seen it. The cars idle was nice and smooth for about 2 months with no problem. After this weekend the CRAPPY idle came back. Now I REALLLLYYY don't know what the problem is because I have no check engine light (no OBD2 codes).

I tried the good ol' "reset the ecu" trick. (When you disconnect the battery for a few minutes and put it back on) WELLLLL.... IT WORKED! I was so excited to see that that was all it was!

But wait, its not that easy.... THE ROUGH IDLE CAME BACK TO HAUNT ME AGAIN!!! I'm getting very aggravated and I wanted to see if anyone else has ever had this problem!

Also one more thing. As you can see in the video the idle at around 900RPM, but sometimes it feel like idling at 400-450RPM after a nice drive on the highway. And sometimes it idles a 1050ish RPM.

Please, any feedback is well appreciated! I just want to know what my next step should be!

MOD LIST: Evo 9 turbo and diverter valve, light crank pully, 3 1/2'' FMIC, LICP, 3" TBE, 255 pump, halman boost controller.

Dude I have EXACTLY the same idle problem, on stock cams...

did you find out what this was???

Not really an update, but I did swap out the old spark plugs for a new set. This did not solve anything.

I found a leak last week on the hosing from the throttle body to the UICP. I replaced the hosing and it solved nothing.

I disconnected the battery terminals off the battery for about half a day and then reconnected the terminals. NOTHING.

The next thing on my list is to check out the EGR valve.

Here is the latest clip on my Evo 8:

update:

so i finally had the time to take a look at my car and attempt to fix the problem. so far i've replaced the EGR valve...didn't work. replaced the PVC....that too did not work. haven't driven my car in about 3 weeks so the battery died. got a jump and attempt to take it out for a drive to try and recharge the battery. first thing i noticed is now i have a SES light and the rough idle came on earlier. before it would come on when the car was warm. now it's on right away. the very weird thing while on the drive....i turned on the headlights and the car jerked. thought maybe it was a coincident so i turned it off and then on again and the car jerked again. after about half hour or so drive came back and stopped the engine. try to restart it again but nothing...apparently it didn't charge enough. im starting to think im having some electrical problems now. to make matters worst, i think my oil pan is leaking. my shifter is also not returning to the middle when i move it side to side. WTF?!?!?!?!!?!

i didn't get a chance to check the code because i don't have a code reader and even if i did, there's not enough charge left in the battery to turn the car on.

so basically, this update is to say that not only is my problems not going away, it's getting worst.

Do yourselves a favor and delete the EGR altogether and never have to worry about it again. I blocked off the head and removed the entire EGR system. Really clears up some room on top of the intake manifold. Don't have to worry about all those stupid hoses as well.

Well I am very pleased to tell everyone on this thread that after forever I finally fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

I deleted the EGR vacuum lines by looping the 2 vac lines on the top of the throttle body back into each other and presto fixed yeah!

Must have been the egr solenoid or associated vac lines leaking lol.

GJ, if I get a weird idle later I'll know what to check first. How many miles and how much hp you got though?

You need to one by one eliminate where it isn't until you find it.

Start by eliminating 1 vacuum line at a time until the hissing stops thats what I did.
After I isolated if it didn't fix it I would then reconnect it and move on to the next one. Eventually I found the problem to be EGR associated vacuum lines.
