wastegate setting

After installing a stock wastegate back on an evo 9 turbo i feel as though I had to stretch it further than normal to hook it on the hot side. Is this normal? it seems that this would cause the wastegate to open early. I can get pics of the wastegate if necessary.

Make sure the arm is in the right position for best fitment . It will turn in the can so align it that way, if it still seems like you have too much preload then turn the buckle at the end of the arm to the amount of preload you need. there is a video on forced performance site on how it is done.

Also if its harder to put on it wont open as soon, not too soon as you mentioned.

Correct, you have it preloaded to hold more boost longer. At stock it tapers very quickly, with preload it holds a couple psi into redline. If you're tuned it was probably set that way intentionally.
