08+ STi Pros:
- Quiet, More comfortable seats, better interior, more creature comforts (OEM NAV option, DCCD), updated body style, linear modification path (less ways to go wrong)
08+ STi cons:
- Factory tune is dangerous (First mod should a Cobb AP and at least a OTS map or ECUFLash, how subaru let it leave the factory like that for the last 3 years is way beyond me), trying to get anything over 350 HP out of it gets pricey, Like it or hate it styling
06 Evo IX Pros:
- Easy to mod, half the cost of the Scooby, a MYRIAD of ways to mod (Seriously there are almost as much mods out for the Evo as there are for a civic), cheaper comparatively to mod, can get 350-400 easily on OEM turbo and E85 (injectors, fuel pump, tune) cheaper to insure, styling is still relevant
06 Evo IX Cons:
- Finding one that hasn't been modded or wreck is 99.5% impossible, even if its stock its probably been modded in its previous life (If this is a deal breaker then thats just the reality of it), cheaper feeling interior, body is still 3 years old, older car in 5 years instead of it being a 5 year car its a 10 year old car
Thats about all I can think of right now. My wfie drives the 08 STi and I won the Evo. After living with the STi for the last few weeks I can honestly say I'm glad I bought my Evo (I was going to buy an STi) and I'm glad she got the STi.
I would've been frustrated by the lack of options and how expensive it is to mod the STi, conversly for my wife I'm glad there is a basically one way to mod STi's (If you are trying to rebuild the motor or going for a big turbo). Hatchbacks (While I love them) suit her better.
Overall we are the coolest parents in our neighbourhood. LOL.
Good luck.

Also both cars have the same basic system, only with minor differences.
WRX = Open front and rear Diffs. Viscous center diff.
Evo IX = LSD front and rear. Active center diff.
The transmission in the WRX is a transaxle because the engine is in front of the front wheels. The center diff and front open differential are contained inside the transmission.
The Evo has the engine further back over the top of the front wheels (not in front of) and simply places the LSD front diff and ACD inside the T-case. It's not a transfer case even remotely similar to a truck. It has no high or low range, and the center diff lets the front and rear turn at different speeds unlike a locked 4x4 truck differential.
So basically they have the same basic parts, simply with a different layout. The T-case simply holds the same parts the WRX places inside the transmission. However the LSD diffs in the IX are superior to the open diffs in the WRX. The ACD is superior to the Viscous center diff in the WRX.
I should also add that the steering is lightyears better on the Evo. Very crisp and responsive with no slack in the wheel from left to right. Very BMW/Porsche feeling and if you get the tighter ratio rack, it's even borderline twitchy but in a positive "agile" way. I personally enjoy taking 90 degree turns with very little rotation of the wheel since you can use one hand. The longer racks require both arms or uncomfortable movements since you need over 1 full rotation just to turn the car 90 degrees. More and more I find that I love the Evo's steering for that reason.

I guess ur right..but I had a wrx and I miss the boxer rumble..but no matter what the evo feels like an formula 1 racecar lol..i love how the wrx feels and looks more beefer..in the end its up to the buyer..
thinking about going sti. i agree with what everyone said. i have an evo viii mr and if i'm looking to mod and make power, i would stay with the evo. but i'm looking for a dd, so sti is something im considering.
I agree, I am not a fan of the new WRX's. I have had a 05 STi, 2 Evo IX's, 2 X's and a 08 WRX. I prefer the IX but my only complaint is the interior is pretty bland compared to that of the X. IX is by far my first choice for any car in the SUB 60K range...Go with what you like though, nothing beats the boxer engine growl...at least you will sound good when your behind the IX at the track lol

LOL- love your ending sentence.
fixed
300whp is downpipe & tune territory for the 09+.
I've been around subaru since the wrx first came here. I'm not sure if it's ken blocks doing or the new design but for some reason, everyone and their mother has to have a 2011 wrx.
Still looks like a bloated camry imo. *shrug* Evo IX all the way.

I went through 2 engines and 2 transmissions (05 legacy gt) and called it a day.
go with the evo, I have a 06 evo 9 and I had a 06 sti, I would always take the evo over sti now, and I would always take a sti over any year wrx because of the better handling, power, and overall everythings just better and you can pick up a older, low miles, stock sti for under the price of a new wrx. But like I said I would ALWAYS pick the evo over sti. I get better gas mileage,(in my opinion)handles better, rides better, more mod friendly, and parts seem to be cheaper. the old rule of thrumb with opening up the engine or working on the tranny, wrx shouldnt go much past 300 and sti not past 350-375. And to get to those numbers is more costly.
To sum my thought up, evo>sti>wrx.
4LIFE!

Your 5th gear went out didnt it? those engines and trannies shouldn't go much past 300 without $$$ dropped in them
I have been debating this situation for almost a year now. I'm getting out of the s2k scene, and want something AWD, so my choices are 06 IX, or 11 wrx. I have decided that the IX is best for my needs, as it will be cheaper to maintain and insure, while still putting a large smile on my face when driving.
Really you have to drive both cars, think about what your really using the car for, and make the best decision for you.
