Evo VIII / IX's becoming more expensive?
Might have a bit of insight here. In NZ we've got every gen of EVO. Now evos 1 - 3 have pretty near stopped depreciating (maybe even appreciating). EVO 4 - 6 are still depreciating moderately quickly (4 is shocking, lucky to sell for over 9 or 10k $NZ). EVO 7 and 8 are depreciating slowly and the 9 is sort of sitting pretty. 1 - 3 are actually worth the same/more as 5s and 6s. I would pay 15k $NZ for a mint EVO 1, I could get an EVO 6 for that. I'd prefer the 1 though. Keeping in mind that EVO 1s have over 10 years on the ct9a, it's a while before we can see if they follow that trend. And in NZ we don't have our own motor industry so we have a much higher tolerance for imports. So whether this is relative in the USDM, idk. (EVO 6 TME is not depreciating).

for the same reason a mkIV supra is still @ least 30k bone stock. that arent making any more, and it boils down to the simple matter of supply and demand. i would estimate that a supra bites the dust via traffic accident probably once a month. so, considering that they aren't making any more, and there are less of them every day, the commodity you refer to as an EVO, appreciates (becomes more valuable) each and every day, because they inevitably end up getting wrecked and totaled. so if you have followed my sequence of logic, you could induce that just like supras getting more rare, and thus more expensive as a result of being in high demand, and in low supply, the ever growing price of a evo 8/9 can be decoded and understood. that is, the law of supply and demand dictates that, when a given commodity is rare, (especially when production ceases, thus that commodity falls in number every day), and the demand is constant, or increasing, the price will increase as a result.
hope that made sense

I think theres alot of factors that go into it but so far the trend is that the price is staying relatively steady. IMO I think its a combination of everything. Its that the 9 was the last of the hardcore evo with the most advanced/best version of the 4g63, the winning racing history the evo seems to have, the sport compact car culture boom around 2003 which sparked a ton of interest, Mitsubishi cutting its performance line and the how the X is considered softer than the 8 and 9. I agree with the DSM statement that the DSM fell drastically because the evo was essentially the all around better version of that car. I dont agree with the statement that the evo is like the USDM muscle cars. Those were pioneers of performance cars all together. The evo could possibly draw interest down the line when the teens will be able to buy one in 20 years or so but by that time, like someone else stated, you can get a RHD jdm version with the import laws so.. I dont seem them appreciating but atleast holding their value pretty well. For instance I bought my MR in 2007 (or 2008) from a Mitsu dealer, it was traded in for a X. It had 5k miles on it, all stock with 1 previous owner who purchased new from the same dealer. I drove it off the lot for $28k. I think I got a pretty good deal since the car MSRP'd for about $38k in change. Currently it only has 15k miles on it. Its my baby and I can never see myself selling it or making it not streetable. If I wanted to make a race car I would just buy a shell or a 2003 and drop a built engine in it but not my MR.

Please do not put all second owners in the same boat together.
I am the second owner of my evo and I care for it better than the first owner.
It is not about if one buys the car used or not. Some people just do not take care of their stuff regardless of if it is new or not. Being that I was raised fairly poor I can tell you I value every penny and what that penny gets me.

However, there are loads of Evos out there with multiple ownership histories that are just thrashed. On average, every new owner adds a new layer of modification at some level. This leads to things not being put back correctly or "cheapo" mods being done that hurt the car.
I know this is really generalizing, but let's be honest...most tuner cars see pretty hard lives in the hands of multiple owners.
Well, considering I didn't say all 2nd and 3rd owner Evos (although I can see how it can be taken that way) I wasn't trying to lump every non-first owner into the mix. I myself am the 2nd owner of my 9 and treat the car better than I treat myself (first owner of my previous 2 Evos).

The guy who owned my car before me (the first owner) just did not give the car the care it deserved, then like a fool traded it for an rx8.
I have spent some time fixing the stuff he tore up. Luckily for me there are always part outs on evolutionm as I got all my replacement parts on here. The only things not fixed at this point is some scratches in the plastic on the rear and front bumper (not huge but noticable to me especially), about two cig. burns in side and the carpet being torn up under the drivers side mat due to running with no mats.
Aside from those things I have fixed the worst of it. The car was stock though when I got it and was never modded (it was a loal car).
I would hate to see one from a large city area that has had more than 3 owners (at least in many cases). If even two of the owners were like the guy who had mine before me the car would have looked far worse.
^ That goes both ways. My car was owned by 3 owners I believe previous to me. One or more of the owners beat the crap out of the car with regular tracking and drag racing. When the trans was pulled out to replace the clutch I could see score marks on the inside of the bell housing from when a clutch was grenaded in it (and the housing had a small crack). And various things around the car suggested that too. But clearly the owner knew the car well and took care of it well. Interior is very very clean, engine and trans is still strong, etc.
I'm the same way with the car. I "abuse" it heavily. Lots of drag passes and track days, lots of winter driving and winter track days, and I put 30k miles on it since I bought it last June. But I know how to take care of it, I don't cheap out on stuff, I don't neglect the details and the little things that need to be done, I don't put stupid scratches or wear on the interior, etc.
IMO its very hard to find a car owned by someone who knows enough to maintain it really well, or has no problem dumping $$$$$ to have a good garage maintain it, but still wants to baby it.

They are actually pretty fair priced. Alot of people are trying to get the money back that they put into the cars. Its also very hard to find an Evo that hasnt been beat up pretty hard. Cause no matter what anyone says, I refuse to believe that anyone has actually babied their evo. But for the most part, they are fair priced. I would expect the IX's to be more expensive though, being that they are the last of the classic body styles.
For those of you saying that the JDM versions of the EVO will be worth more, I disagree. Lots of JDM RHD supras and rx7's are brought over each year and their value is always significantly less than their USDM counterparts. This is due to the fact people in North America generally don't want RHD or go through the hassle of importing or learning how to drive RHD. That is why a 1994 RHD 2JZ sells for $20k, while a USDM LHD with probably more mileage will fetch $30+.
Usually the JDM stuff shipped over here sells for much less than if you can get the LHD version.

First that's partly because the market is still dominated by people who want cheap cars, and not collectors. I can easily understand how having the steering wheel on the right side could be worth 10 grand to someone. That's a daily hassle that, as a person seeking a cheap car, might be hard to live with.
I think the equation changes once the market is dominated by collectors instead of people seeking cheap transportation. Look at the 2000GT as an example. LHD/RHD doesn't matter.
Which brings me to my second point -
There isn't much difference between a 1994 Supra from Japan and a 1994 Supra for the domestic market. The equation changes once you look at cars like the FQ400, the Lancer Evolution T.M. Edition, and even the Lancer Evolution IX from Japan versus the USDM Evolution IX (AYC, special editions which add ralliart performance parts). Will a 1997 JDM Supra with the BEAMS engine sell the same/less then a 1997 USDM Supra? Maybe, but I doubt it.
The key to any car being truly collectible is limited numbers of desirable options (see Porsche 993 Turbo S) and hard to find examples. Both of which the Evolution doesn't have in it's USDM incarnation (in any year).
Finally, let's not forget what originally spawned this discussion. People were noticing values of their used cars increasing. I will again repeat this is not isolated to Evolutions - even used Camrys and Accords saw their value increase or hold unusually steady in the past couple years. The fact is there is an industry wide shortage of used cars in certain categories, and with the economy down more and more people are turning to the used market to save money, even on their used econobox performance cars.
I just literally read ALL 7 pages of this thread... quite interesting topic really, now let me throw in my 2 cents. Yes i do argee with most in this thread that the evo X is a pig and is nothing like the 8 or 9 performance and looks wise, i've almost always noticed here in my ****ty state of florida that there is a RISE of evo Xs being sold used as opposed to 8s and 9s.
Now when its comes to used 8s and 9s being sold, i see that not only are they being sold in the high teens but also all the way up to the mid 20s for a car that is 5 to 6 years old thats damn good i should say, but as others asked will the 8s and 9s get to the rarity and desire levels as a supra or 3rd gen rx-7 ???? i can see it happening in a couple more years.
Look on craigslist , ebay , car forums etc . supras, and rx-7s are being sold for ridiculous prices and mind you these cars are nearing the 15 plus years old mark. and you still have people spending large amounts of money on them even enough to buy yourself a brand new car that would be semi comparable to them.
Oh also a few months back i was toying with the idea of selling my evo, i was offered from a member on these forums 20 grand for my 2005 evolution 8 with 45,000 miles... Yes i did think long and hard about selling it and taking the money but i decided against it. a personal friend also just bought a 03 evo with 100,000 miles for $12,000 a week ago. So are they holding value ? YES!!! should they go up in value? i think and hope so but only time will tell.
Also at least here in the sunshine state im starting to notice Less and Less 8s and 9s around me anymore. thats a good thing for me at least value wise.
