Should I get a shell and build it up

So I dont have enough money right now to straight out buy an Evo.. But I am already dying not having something to work on... and the thought of waiting two years to buy one is killing me... So I was wondering what you guys thought IF i started looking for a shell (maybe a rolling shell) and started from there. I have a buddy who is my mechanic and I use his tools and would keep it at his shop and we exchange labor for labor so I dont pay him anything even when he helps... so not including labor costs what do you guys think the costs would be... Would it even be worth it? I have a car Im driving now so im not tripping on needing a car, but I am dying without something to work on in all honesty.

Thanks for your suggestions

Do it! I built one and it was the best experience I've had with cars. Once you build one you appreciate it that much more. You're looking at about $8,000 to buy and complete a shell.

It is cheaper but alot of work. If you dont have experiences in all aspects of cars you will get stuck somewhere. That includes electrical, transmissions, bodywork, interior and many many other things. Don't want to discourage you but I had a car sitting in my garage for 6 months since I didnt know how to do interiors and I couldnt find a complete carpet kit for cheap.

I would just seriously look for a wrecked evo and build that.... it would have majority of the parts you are looking for in the long run and you still get something to fix and work on.

Ah this will be sitting in a buddys shop for at least a year or two... Im not tripping on time, Ive got a DD, I dont have a ton of money though. My friend/mechanic is a "do it all" kind of guy, he has no problem with the Evos because he's very familiar with the 4G63 engine. and I know body work.. Im pretty sure we can figure electrical out...

my fear with a wrecked Evo is frame damage. I dont want to waste my time on something that is already jacked. I want a straight body, but I dont mind it stripped down.

damn so basically you said screw it and just bought one. that seems like a good deal though so you just couldnt pass it up?

but I want to get one for what you sold it for. lol What changed your mind? why did you give up? I saw you were having problems getting it to run or something. did you just say screw it? for that reason?

the car was just starting to nickle and dime me and was not even close to being on the road if you have another evo you can pull every part you need from i would say go for it. but if not i suggest by a running one its alot less stress i really just got impatient. after i sold mine i found two local guys with wrecked ones and they let me have whatever i needed figures after i sell mine good luck either way and let me know if you need parts.

The nickels and dimes would kill you I think. If you had access to a wrecked, un-repearable Evo that you could steal the little bits off of, then it might work. If not, when you can't find the right headliner, or switch or ashtray, you'd drive yourself nuts. On a side note, I have a perfectly clean carpet if someone still needs one!

Yeah, the small stuff will kill you.

It is usually much cheaper to buy a car than to build it piece by piece.

To do it on the cheap, you usually need to have incredible hookups. More than place to work on and tools... More like you work at a salvage yard and get insurance total-losses that you can pull complete assemblies off of.

No, I'm saying $8,000 total, the $8k includes the price of the shell plus the parts to get it running.
