From my experience, the whole hood would have to be sanded and clear coated.

So what can I use to protect the hood? If I just wanted to leave that spot then

Don't park in the sun lol.

But in all seriousness, if you leave that spot, it's going to spread eventually if you park in the sun. Just fix the entire hood, and have an extra layer of clear coat. Then after that you'd have to wax it more often to prevent any fading.

I got tired of that and just went back to a OEM hood.

If you wet sand the hood and have it re cleared with a uv protected clear coat by a professional and then wet sand and buff it should never fade again I have done this multiple times and don't have space in the garage for any of my cars and it has never faded again.

im in the process of refinishing my seibon hood. I had a few heat cracks and small marks that i was initially trying to get out. At least on mine, there is a yellow-colored coat right above the cf layer and to get the cracks out i had to go all the way down to the cf. Depending on how deep your mark is you may have to go all the way to the cf layer, leaving a slightly discolored area from the rest of the hood

Yeah there is no optimal way to get the hood completely fixed unless you reclear it.

This is one reason I really do not want any more CF on my car than the wing.

The original owner of my car never garaged it and the wing got eaten up. I recleared it but there were a few white spots in the CF. I got another and had it recleared. CF is just a big pain I think.

On a side note.

Does anyone know what actually causes all these problems with CF? Is it just that it draws in more heat and UV rays than normal paint or what ever?

Thanks for the advise, I'll keep that in mind should any of my clearcoat fade or get damaged. Sounds easy to me to be honest, I've done a little body and paint here and there with a buddy. And its just 1 part of the car, not like its huge.

Best advice for cf users is before you even install it on the car reclear it. That's what I do because I know there's no company that makes a product that doesn't fade.

And to raistlin, I think its the combonation of the heat since cf is black in color it doesn't reflect all of the suns rays it just absorbs them and the gel coat that is used.

You would think companies would find a solution to this problem but I guess we are out of luck until they do.

Thanks.
That was my best guess, just figured I would ask

I doubt any companies are really working on figuring it out. I mean they have had how many years knowing that it happens. My guess is most are just happy to get the money they do and not worry to much about R&D.

Either way after seeing the issues with CF in a lot of threads I decided against it quickly.
