hks 280 cam gear setting ?

Okay so this may be a stupid post but my car doesn't want to lope except just every once in a blue moon it will hit a lick for a second. I think this is weird considering it is a decent cam? The cam gears are set to -4/-1. Could the setting keep it from loping? I know power is great but i love a good lope and its driving me crazy! It idles between 850-950 most of the time. I mean i see alot of people just have them at 0/0 or like -2/-2? Just curious i was told this -4/-1 is for top end. Reguardless could changing it affect lope? Thanks.

try setting the cam gear 0-0 , your tuner shuld help you dileing in the cam gears , depinding on the powerband you whant , need to do this on a dyno , to make the best result , takes a hole day

the car made some good power they way that they are. I was just curious if the settings affected cam lope or not? I know it idles low enough to do so.

IIRC, John Bradley just posted some info on this in the ECUFlash forum.

Edit - Take a look at the info in this thread. Good stuff...

The setting you are using are for top end perf as you indicated and yes those settings will give a tamer idle as a result. Moving them ie advancing the timing will add "lope". I have to say, performace minded folks, no matter their preference --top end or low end, build for that reason.. Making changes cause it sounds good???? I will never understand. But GL.

so basically if it go to a say, -2/-1 setting it will lope more but i will lose power? I thought the settings only shifted the power band between low and high rpm?

no no i wont trade performance for sound by any means but i wasn't aware that changing it lost power i thought advancing the current settings would only bring more mid range and pull power from top end?

You dont lose power, the power band curve moves to the left or in you case will add more midrange at the cost of topend power. I am running 274/278 HKS cams, at +2, -1 and its fine in idle sound and quality.., ran 272\264 earlier and same thing with the same settings---now this was for better lowend and midrange---thats what this kind of change will net you... to add power in places it has to come from somewhere else. A tighter lobe center will make it idle lopey and thats what these settings will get you... run 0/0 first and see what you think.

okay well its sounds like -2/-1 would shift back some towards midrange and lope more and 0/0 would do so as well. Retune required or not?

Thinking so, last time I made cam ajustments just like this-- I picked up knock in upper rpms around 6-7k. Not to say you will and others may say no need. Just telling you what i picked up. Disconnect your battery as well, that will reset the ecu and get you real close.

I like a good idle, somewhere between lopey and stock --a solid rumble.--but as I said earlier, I really perfer lowend/midrange power over topend power and as a by product I get the rumble, but not thumping. I drive on the street, don't do any 1/4ml stuff, we have an 1/8 mile track close by-- but I like road racing and instant power on when I pass, just flick the throttle and its done. I dont like a lot of attention-- so I tend to pass on loud exhaust, lopey idles, and anything else that says---GIVE ME A TICKET PLS! old school sleeper.
