Even if you buy in a state w/o sales tax and yours has it you have to pay when you get home.

As far as the driving cross country... Figure 36.5 cents/mile wear and tear from Idaho to NYC and it doesn't seem to be a good option anymore.

LOW APR will save you the most!!!

If you buy an evo for $28,500 out the door at invoice and put $5000 down. The amount finaced will be 23,500. If you had 6 apr% for 60 monthes your car note will $454.32 and interest will be $3759.25. The actual price you paid for car is $27259.25. If you get 3.55 apr on 23,500 your car note will be $428.03 and interest will $2181.94. The actual price of the car will be $25,681. The price diference is $1,578.

You need to fight with dealership to get the best APR and let them know that you want under 4% apr. I bought my evo used with 9K and was able to get 3.55 APR.

Both those are off because you didn't add back in the $5k down payment. Provided the other numbers are correct the actual cost would be $32259 or $30681. The price is $28500 no matter how you choose to pay for it.

Unfortunately, too many people are too stupid to understand that and take a fair deal from the first guy who is also the one who does most of the work for them.
People will drive 15 miles across town to go to a gas station that has gas for 2 cents/gallon less. They burned $1.50 to save $0.30 on gas, but they got a "good deal". Most people don't understand opportunity costs (what xphillipjrx was getting at - your time is worth money) or that driving to every dealership within 100 miles trying to save $200 is really a net loss (what you were saying).

Your second point sounds like typical salesman complaining, IMO, though it's true.

I would go to one of the dealers that was marking the car up $10k and offer them $18.5...tell them it's a market adjusment. To me any of the dealers that did that are utter slime and they deserve to be low-balled and hopefully lose money and leanr a lesson.

I don't like ADM and am glad we don't do it here however you can't fault someone for wanting to make as much as possible either, no matter if it's the price selling something or their compensation at work or whatever. That's all part of a market driven economy.

Harley Davidson dealers do the same thing all the time. There aren't a handful of them in the entire country where you can buy a bike for Harley's MSRP. The big thing in mSrp is Suggested. It isn't an absolute and dealers aren't held to it.

Everyone *****es and moans and cries foul when ADM puts a price higher than MSRP but they also ***** and moan if the price isn't dropped below MSRP. It's as hypocritical as can be but that's just how people are about car buying.

Rather than faulting someone for what you would do yourself if the tables were turned you should just accept that's how it works and when you're ready go to the next dealer who doesn't add ADM.

I disagree... In buisness there are those who focus on long term and biulding relationships with customers (like my company does) and then there are those that wilkl take every opportunity to rape and gauge. Those that choose the latter path should face the consequences. As the this is the information age the knowledge assymetry that once disadvantaged the buyer has turned the tables and it is the dealers who are at a severe disadvantage. The high turnover of salepeople coupled with a hyper-competietive market do not bode well for dealers that are operating under old-school principles.

LDB I take exception to your assertion "Rather than faulting someone for what you would do yourself if the tables were turned you should just accept that's how it works and when you're ready go to the next dealer who doesn't add ADM." As I said in my buisness we look at the long term. A churn and burn attitude is not something I espouse and I do not resoect those buisnesses operating under that principle.
