I don't think the EVO is very important in Mitsubishi's US future. Here is a quote from the new CEO.

"O'Neill said Mitsubishi's strategy to attract youth has been successful in its objective, but not beneficial to company with a lineup primarily composed of family-sized sedans and bigger sport-utes. Its biggest launch in history, the 2004 Galant mid-size sedan, commences next Monday with the burden of attracting mainstream buyers with legitimate credit. "We need to appeal to a wider customer base," he said, insisting that Mitsubishi will shift from focusing on targeting age groups to attitude groups. "Not just the young, but the young at heart. Think spirited families, think spirited empty nesters. There are a lot of folks with spirit, with a youthful mindset. It's not about age, it's about attitude."

Mitsubishi USA seems to think it is in the market to sell SUV's to older buyers. They are going to offer a version of the Durango pretty soon. It looks to me like they are running away from the youth market (read EVO) after the loosing a bunch of money with the 0-0 financing fiasco.

BTW Mitsubishi stock trading was suspended for a while on the Japanese stock exchange. This report is from the Auto Insider website. Here is a link....http://www.detnews.com/2004/autosins.../c03-35598.htm

Mitsubishi Motors’ stock suspended

TOKYO — Mitsubishi Motors Corp. shares were suspended from trading after the Nihon Keizai newspaper said the automaker may sell 100 billion yen ($941 million) in new stock to shareholders of DaimlerChrysler AG, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corp. Shares were suspended from 8:20 a.m. Tokyo time and won’t start trading until an hour after the company provides further information on the report, the Tokyo Stock Exchange said. Mitsubishi Motors officials weren’t immediately reachable by telephone to comment on the report before business hours in Tokyo.

Woah -
M'bishi Motors may seek capital boost
Shares tumble on Nikkei report of 100 bln yen request
By Osamu Tsukimori, CBS MarketWatch
Last Update: 2:25 AM ET Jan. 14, 2004

TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Mitsubishi Motors fell just over 3 percent Wednesday on a media report that the automaker is considering requesting a 100 billion yen ($943 million) capital increase from shareholders DaimlerChrysler and two major companies in the Mitsubishi group.

DaimlerChrysler, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Corp. are negotiating with MMC for the capital injection via the private placements of new shares, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

Mitsubishi Heavy Chairman Takashi Nishioka was quoted as saying that Mitsubishi Group "will lend its full support to Mitsubishi Motors."

Mitsubishi Motors spokesman Toru Kawahata said the report was speculative, adding that Nishioka may only have expressed general support to the automaker, which became independent from Mitsubishi Heavy in 1970.

The Japanese automaker, which is 37-percent owned by DaimerChrysler (DCX: news, chart, profile), also said it plans to launch "a few" new cars every year from September in the Japanese market, compared to one on average in the past.

Shares of Mitsubishi Motors (MMTOF: news, chart, profile) (JP:7211: news, chart, profile) closed down 8 yen at 252 yen after falling as low as 245 yen.

Dale- It seams that going after the young at heart, and with active spirit is exactly who the Evo is meant for. as in Asia and Europe, you see mostly older enthusiasts driving Soorts Cars. People who take them to the track around other enthusiasts who can afford them and enjoy them. Why are Porsches such a common track car, well it's the peer group mentallity. When you go out to run some laps and everyone is running vettes, 911s, Vipers, and M3s. Well those are the cars you think about getting yourself. If tehy gear the Evo towards older more affluant youthful acting individuals, they start to build a raport with those who can show off the car to other enthusiasts at the track.

I think it's a very wise decision to go after the young at heart and avoid the un-credit-worthy young kids who are not able to go to the track and show it off to their friends what it can do. Plus their friends are much less likely to go and purchase and Evo, unlike the Porsche friends buddies at the track who could pick up an Evo if they knew about it and could drive their buddies Evo at the track.

I've seen so many older young at heart folks go buy somethign becuase one of their freinds got one and they had a chance to play with their friends. Our President just went a picked up a Thunderbird on a whim becuase his Golf buddy let him drive his and he thought it was so amazing. I see this happen at the track as well. SOmeone brings out a new Viper and they all go for a few laps, and within a month two others show up with their new Vipers. These are the older kids who once they get a hands on experience with something, they end up with one. They can afford it, They can enjoy it, and they can show their friends who can afford it what it's all about. Soem kid showing his school buddies his new Civic Si, and talking about all the things it can do, but never will becuase he can't afford to take it to the track, his school buddies can't go to the track becuase it's past their supper time, etc doesn't get more civic sales. it may make them want the oh so cool civic, but they'll be in a taurus hauling their kids around before they end up at the track with their dream b18 swap $15k in mods civic or whatever. Maybe when the kids leave the nest, they'll be interested in running that civic around a track, but then they'll probably want something to use daily as well, and hence the mid life crisis. And with a Viper, Vette, M3, M5 their on their way to enjoying the fun 20 years later than hoped.

The young at heart old foggies are also less likely to race around the streets in an Evo and give it a bad rep to the local law enforcement as well..

Around here I hardley see any. They only got 2 Evos at the Mitsu dealer and the Subaru dealer got 2 STis. Each still has one on their lot, I have never seen the others running around so I am not sure where they went.

I'm sure dealer markup had/has something to do with the leftovers. Rick Case Mitsu in GA was trying to sell me a silver EVO they had beaten as their demo car for over 6 months for 33k....3k under msrp (Out of the sales guys mouth). I took the test drive and listen'd to this moron spit out ridiculous details about the EVo (twin turbo v6 motor) and how his lancer with a 40cc turbo (WTF IS THAT) will walk all over a EVO.

EVOIIIU what dealership do you work @. I'm not in a position to buy an EVO now since I'm looking for a house but I will be hopefully after the summer time. I'd like to stop in and talk to you about it.
Oh yeah my heart is set on a Silver one but Weightless white and the blue is def. starting to pique my interest.

Corporate decisions are made by the bottom line numbers. And sales of the Evo are not good right now.

What the hell does that mean? The Corporate decision to sell the EVO here has already been made..

Now what?

The EVO has sold just fine. It's gotten the attention of EVERYONE that appreciates performance cars, and gotten some big accolades in a very short time from the press (COY, Car of the DECADE, Etc, Etc)

Given the obvious facts, I think the car has been a SMASH hit.

I personally hope they stop selling the EVO here in the states. It will just make mine worth a whole lot more.
