Dilemma which option to go with.
Hey guys, long time lurker around here, always wanted to get an evo.
Anyways by the end of 2012 I will be able to have an evo, and my price range is 20-25k.
Since eventually I will want a 500-600hp evo, I have 2 options in buying one:
Option 1: Buy a lower mileage (30-50k miles) evo for $20k first, drive it for some time, and then build that 60k mile block so it can handle more power.
OR
Option 2: Start fresh by buying a roller ($8-$10k?), and then a block and just build the bottom end right away while putting the whole car together, which I am guessing is going to be around $10-$15k for the complete motor.
Keep in mind I am in Toronto, and nothing is available here lol, there are a few shops I can use to put the block together, and my mechanical knowledge is not THAT great (a lot better than average joe)
In the long run I think it would be cheaper to go with option 2
Anyways what do you guys think? Comments, thoughts all appreciated
Thanks

One thing to remember is that if you are planning on doing a build of any significance (ie more than just bolt ons), you WILL have downtime. This downtime will be from builds, rebuilds, maintenance, breaking, etc. This is exacerbated by the fact that you won't be doing your own work (excluding little maintenance, pads, fluids, etc).
My first advice to people is to make sure you have a reliable daily driver or at least backup vehicle. You do not want to be stuck because a part didn't fit right or didn't come in on time or broken transmission or axle, etc.
After that, take a look at your finances and see what your income can support. It's usually better to go wholesale and do everything all at once with one downtime, but if your pocketbook can't support that, then do it in phases. Bolt ons, top end, drivetrain, suspension, bottem end would be my general suggestion.
We'll see if others agree with this concept.

Hey guys, thx for the responses
The car will be a DD and some track on the weekends.
NO drag strips.
As for downtime, I have another car so downtime is ok for me.
Also, about a shop doing my car, I am not sure. It really depends how much I believe in myself in putting the car together lol, and that will probably take more time (and a ****load of "help me" threads), than just sending it to a shop.
