My timing belt snapped when i was driving my Evo.

I went for a test drive after completely putting my car back together. I was going about 25mph and heard a loud pop. I lost power and i tried to restart it. The car didnt start so i looked under the hood and noticed the timing belt had snapped. I have done other mods and worked on my car. Although i dont know what is wrong with it. Hopefully
i am not completely screwed.. Does anyone have any experience on this subject. I did not take the head off the car so i hope i would only have to replace valves considering how fast the car was going.

I think after u heard a loud pop I would have got out and looked before restarting, at least u have some bent valves, so ya start pullin the head and assess the damage. How many miles were on the belt?

Whats mods were done? Was the belt just replaced?

Definitely bent valves, most likely bent a few seats also. Fingers crossed you didn't damage any pistons.

you mean you didn't do the whole kit people 'round here recommend, pulleys, tensioners, etc?

maybe that's why a brand new gates belt might snap?

sucks, brudah. sorry to hear and good luck with everything.

Sucks dude! Did u do the install? Can u take a pic of the break in the belt. I know it sucks to get it back runnin and then have it take a crap on ya. I wonder if it was just a faulty belt or if something caused it to prematurely break.

the belt looked like it was shredded. im guessing the teeth on the cams. I am currently deployed to Afghanistan. So, as soon as i get back my first mission is to take the head off an examine it. I did the work 90% by myself with some help from my roommates.

If you reused the belt and it had 15k on it, did you mark which direction the belt would have been turning to put it back on the same way??

This does make a difference if you are going to reuse a timing belt.

As far as being broken, can't say that it'd make a difference there whether or not you marked the direction of rotation. Cause if it was going to break, it would have broken either way But, was the belt snapped in half/broken, or was it just off of the cam gears and had a ton of slack?

If it's just a ton of slack chances are you didn't put back on in the same direction of rotation as before.

The belt was snapped.. meaning broken. slack would be a completely different terminology. The belt was running fine for a long time. I have replace a few belts on my evo. I think you are calling me incompetent..

Don't think he's calling you incompetent, just asking questions to figure out why your belt snapped. Maybe someone on the forums can possibly avoid this. Either way it sucks bro! Stay safe in Afghanistan!!!

Just keeping it real.
You never know. Could be the only lucky guy that has a one of a kind Evo with a clearance motor.
