Battery Recommendation ?

Hi Guys,

Have an 06 Evo RS, the battery and brake light is lit on the dash, dealer tells me the battery is the culprit and is fading fast.

Need a new battery.

Any suggestions? Is the OEM one garbage? Looking at the ligher "mini" batteries, but I'm in Canada and am worried about starting power during freezing temps. I don't have any fancy stereo or wattage requirements either.

Thanks!

Best case is to replace with a full size battery... I wouldn't say the OE battery is garbage as it fully suits the needs of the OE vehicle... but that being said, there are upgaded batteries which can be purchased that exceed the OE battery specs

I try not to say things like this but just hit up your local parts store and buy one of their quality choices. If your stock one is on the way out, any car battery will be an improvement.

A mini battery will be nice if you went with a short route upper intercooler pipe. Then again, you can just relocate a full size battery to the trunk.

Although I'm not a "battery guru". It's just what I've always done.

i would stay away from mini batteries in colder climates. i dont like having to put it on a tender all the time. also cant really use your alarm if u have one since it'll draw power. this is based on my experience with a 5lb braille battery on an ST car. cant leave key in and have the dinging sound or leave radio on.

oem battery is not garabe, it does weight a lot. if your focusing on weight, u can do the miata battery or the 51r honda battery, still puts out enough cca and is 9 lbs lighter.

Any Miata battery will fit and do the trick? Just go to the Mazda dealer and pickup an OEM one? No fitment issues?

I've owned a lot of cars over the years, and have never had to replace a battery... strange...

Interstate MT35 (MT stands for MegaTron), it's a full size battery(500 CCA). It's a white battery with a green top, and they have a MT+ (640 CCA). I get a deal on them because my boss is an Interstate dealer. Optima redtops came factory on some Evos.

I personally was going to do this, but in my investigation I saw that the larger Braille batteries actually out perform a stock Miata battery in all listed specs (CA, CCA, reserve).... I thought that was strange...
Weights 3lbs less and 1" overall smaller too... B2317 I think is the one I ordered.
However, it does cost ~$50-80more

first off... you just said the stock battery is garbage but yet its 5-6 yrs old and just now giving up on life... most batteries dont make it 3-4 years in my experience.. which is chicago winter experience... my battery got replaced when i did my relocation install. cause i got a machined aluminum optima battery holder. thus i went with the yellow top and its been great ever since... even with 17ft battery cables charging it which i am sure would weaken the charge.
