I know one person, but I think its more because he got a steal of a deal on the Evo...he bought it off a police impound...

He loved his STi, and started to like the Evo after he bought one for his wife...then they stumbled into the deal of a lifetime and he made the switch...

I haven't talked to him lately, but from what I understand he is very happy...

I'm in chicago suburbs as well... I have a WRX and considered the STi, but decided on the Evo. It handles better, the exterior looks better imho and the braking is better. The evo costs less to upgrade and the engine holds up to more abuse. Ask prodrive how many 2.5 blocks they popped by only adding a few psi. BTW, the Sti has fly by wire throttle body and side feed injectors that make it more difficult to upgrade.

My friend is about to switch over to an Evo from his STI. His clutch went out at 6,000 miles then his turbo went up at 10,000 miles and now it's got oil all in the vac lines and the check engine light comes on from time to time. POS. He's going next week to trade it in on the mighty evo.

I had a WRX and made my change to an EVO as well...as difficult a decision to choose between the EVO and STi, I chose my "dream car"...the 4G63 can take a beating and then some... no need to worry about ovaling the cylinder walls of an open / semi- closed deck...

As long as you take care of your care they should both last a very long time. My friend treated his evo like a piece of crap and he couldnt drive at all. He reflashed the ecu and contstantly over revved the motor and ended up spinning two bearings.. so its all up on how you treat the car...

This DVD series is H I G H L Y recommended. This is not HIN Rave/Party DVDs, these are road tests done by professional JGTC race drivers. Top quality stuff!

Well, you sound you've already made up your mind but I'll toss in my twenty rubles. I was at a track event this past weekend with a guy who's STi was pushing something like 370 WHP. That thing was ridiculously fast and he was an excellent driver. He was passing almost everything, 996 Turbos, 350Z, you name it. So in my opinion, the STi is an extremely capable car with enormous potential and since you've already got a sunk cost, you might as well as go with it. Changing to an Evo won't exactly be cheap and I'm not convinced you'll get a lot for your effort. Neither car will last very long is you push them to their limit and constantly drive at the limit. Btw, here's a link to that guy's car

I had an STI, traded for an EVO last weekend.

Basically, both cars are awesome, you can't reallly go wrong with either one. But for my driving style, the EVO is a better choice.

I would have posted the link to the thread, but for some reason it has been deleted by the moderators.

Heck, a great turbo upgrade will probably turn that STI into a beast.
You made your bed, so you'd better sleep in it. (It's a pretty good bed afterall)
I'm not stinky rich but i am well off...i've paid the STi off and don't owe anything on it. i've had it since 2003 May and it has 7600 miles on it and i've already found a buyer who's interested in buying the car blue book value...so i don't think i'll take that hard of a hit. i put in a sound/nav system totaling about 4 g's into the STi which i will take out and put into the Evo if i decide to go with it. but i do agree that STi will prob have some upgrades available but it will never be as big as the 2.0 wrx market or the Evo's 4g63 market for the past decade. in the long run, if i'm planning to do alot of modding, for the money and what i am getting i can't go wrong with the Evo.

To answer your question, we haven’t blown a single one...

The STi 2.5 liter is very strong block for a stock vehicle
We also have a standard MY04 WRX on sight that is running 1.5 Bar of boost that we have had no problems with eather...

I am not saying that I think the STi is better...
We have 3 STi's and 1 EVO on sight here and I have to say that I like both equally for different reasons.

But, I will say that when lunch time comes around we find ourselves getting into the STi's most of the time.
I think its more fun to put around town in.

Mark at Quantum Racing has dealt with both STI's and Evos. At his shop, everyone would end up in the Evos to drive around in, they are much more fun . If you are going to seriously mod the STI, a standalone is necessary to get around the highly restrictive new ECU. Boost creep and all kinds of problems have been seen trying lesser mods on STI. You want 400-500 hp, handling, at a reasonable cost it's no contest -- Evo all the way.

I see what you’re saying…
Since "Everyone" thinks the EVO is more fun, my opinion must not be valid.

Also…
We have the capability to re-flash the stock STi ECU and it is in no way "restrictive". But, I guess "Everyone" has proven me wrong once again.

My intentions by posting where not to argue your opinions…
Honestly it’s a waist of time.
I like the EVO a lot. But, not more than the STi

Kind Regards

Dan,
Chill out man. means joking. Not much difference between "we find ourselves" and "everyone at the shop" now is there? Come on, this "is" an Evo forum after all. How could you argue with my opinions when your post was before mine? Opinions are what you are going to find on every thread on this site. That doesn't make one any better or worse than another. It seems to me that my post got you to impart some new (to me) information -- That you are reflashing STI ecu's. That's very useful for STI guys I know who are having modding problems.
Cheers,
Bluesmaster
