Anyone crossed over from a Sti to an Evo?

i've thoroughly checked the market for tuning capabilities for both. granted that last year i had my money down on an Evo, at the last minute i took that deposit and transferred it over to get the STi....since then i loved driving the car but my first dose of reality hit me today as i weighed my options for tuning the Sti towards 450-500 whp that would be reliable.

i've heard that the Evo engine deck is fully closed? if this is true then in terms of long term reliability even under heavy modifications and stress the Evo would clearly be teh better choice. the other factor is the fun factor for both. i've never test driven one yet but hearing all of you guys who've test driven both picking the Evo every time makes me wonder. i love the low end torque on the STi but it feels so tame driving it back and forth everyday. it is definitely probably the better daily driver but asides from that and the interior it really doesn't get me excited.
i spoke with my bro-in-law and having test driven both he is clearly going for the EVo.

What i need right now is the pros and cons to the Evo to make my final decision. i'm sure i wouldn't regret getting the Evo over the STi. i just need to sell it and not take a huge hit...i wouldn't trade it in knowing that the dealers would rip me off.
Any feedback is welcomed...please help me to go in the right direction with my decision. i just look foward to hearing your honest evaluation of your evo's.
thanks, Ghost

How about people that have driven both the evo and sti. Can we hear from them?

I am in the Chicago burbs. So if are in the area and you want to drive one I will let you drive mine. I haven't driven the STI and am curious myself. That is, if you want to.

I drove a friend's STi the other night...it has a totally different feel from the Evo...the STi seemed heavier and more planted...not nearly as sharp and darty as the Evo...the STi's engine sounded sweet...but I didn't like the shifter...the Evo shifter is better, IMHO...

Get the Evo...you'll love it!!!

From: Seattle...Got Traction?
a friend of mine loaned me his silver sti yesterday for a two day test drive....he'd rather drive his e55 so i got the sti for two days. i drove an evo two weeks ago. like the magazines say....the sti is less precise....but more growly in sound and civilized overall. the interiors and exteriors are a tossup...its all your preference. Honestly these are both great cars and you really wont lose out buying one or the other.

To me the cars are so close in performance that things like real door sills, a rear wiper and more precise handling/braking are tipping me towards the evo. If i get the sti...the wing and the hood scoop are going to be swapped out for far more subtle substitutes. The evo sounds and feels like it has more of a racing soul. I got burned bad owning a Galant VR4 with regards to reliability so im wary of mitsu. My Impreza RS has run flawlessly for 4 years now....although its obviously underpowered or i wouldnt be looking for an sti/evo. I think the evo's motor has a better track record as is more easily modded for more power from what im seeing in the forum.

My gf doesnt really like either car. My ex gf who is a rally car co driver LOVES anything wiith turbo and awd. My mom drove the sti and was bananas for it...not bad for a 62yo woman. She blew away some old guy in a mustang and was rewarded with an angry scowl at the next stoplight....made her day. Myself, both cars make you feel like a bit of a bad boy pulling into any parking lot...especially one full of soccer dads in minvans

My friends sti is silver....the last color i would want in either car. Hes offering me a tremendous deal on a car with 1346 miles on it. Im just waiting for the right deal to come along.

Mike

I felt the same pain between the STi and the Evo. SO I did the same thing you did and spent time reading boards and test driving the two cars. Since what anyone likes is still a matter of opinion, and usually the one of the person driving ^^;; it will always be a toss up. I think I got my final edge when I found a cool little DVD from a group called bestmotoring titled "Evo Strikes Back"

This DVD gave me some great insight on how the two cars compared and it was a no win situation for the STi from then on out. The other easy kicker here is why pay $5000 or more for the STi when you can get the Evo for much less and at least get a radio.

If you dont buy an Evo at least buy the bestmotoring DVD because its still a good watch. You can find it easily by searching for Evo Strikes Back in google.

SilverGhost,
Unless you are just stinky rich, stick with the STI. You will take a bath on the trade or resale. In the coming year, you will probably see a bunch of new mods come available for the STI which will give you some more options and you will not feel as bad. Heck, a great turbo upgrade will probably turn that STI into a beast.
You made your bed, so you'd better sleep in it. (It's a pretty good bed afterall)
