Well my timing belt I just did it a yesturday and the belt on the bottom is tight but the top where the cam gears are is not that tight, so i guess what else could it be then the tensioner? I have replaced the pullies etc.. Does anyone on know it auto zone or napa or any of those places sell these? I dont want to wait 5 days till i can drive my evo, its sad leaving it in the garage that long. lol

Depending on how the motor stops its rotation, its not always tight between the cam gears. Don't jump to conclusions on it being a tensioner. Is say crank the motor by hand a few times checking the tension at the gears. Also could be, you just don't have the proper tension set.

If you really want a tensioner, I have one I pulled from the shortblock I bought, its got 10k miles on it. Pm me if interested.

tsidrift1 has it right,i've seen this many times and it's nothing to be alarmed of,given of course that the slack is not excessive, both cams tend to turn inward on most engine rotations therefore giving you the slack,if you still need to buy a tensioner i would suggest a Gates tensioner, they make OEM parts and Amazon has it for $61.52 with free shipping! here is the link to it.

Nice! Glad you got it fixed. ExtremePSI has them, dealer prices on the tensioner wouldn't be too bad, and there is also mitsubishioemparts for next time.

They make a tool that takes the tension "off" the timing belt so you can change it, but they don't make the "tensioner" itself.
