Hey guys just purchased my first Evo and i LOVE IT!! It is a 2003 Evo 8 87k miles and just about all stock. Has a full exhaust, Newer Evo 9 turbo and a Manual boost controller. The problem i am having is every time i hit any boost at all it starts to whine. It sounds 100% supercharger. Now the turbo is the newest part on the car and does not leak, sound like a deathwhine, does not do it when i am letting off the gas or any other time. only when i hit boost. Does not lagg or lose bost. Tested for a boost leak and could not find one.

Do you have an open air element? If so I would blame the whining on that, as soon as I did away with my stock airbox I noticed the same.

 

If it's a "supercharger" type whine it could be a bad turbo,i have had a few make the whine noise when the compressor blade starts touching the housing,also is the noise boost related or speed related? if its boost i would perform a freeplay inspection just to make sure,if it's speed related rather than boost it could be drivetrain related then.

 

From what Ive heard the death whine would be on accel and decel.

 

Does the whine get higher as you accelerate ? transfer case maybe.
