I had the same thing right before mine locked up at 60mph on the interstate. Talk about some scary stuff.

 

Filing that sound away in my memory banks. Sorry to hear, man.

 

Having solid motor mounts can make this sound in 1st and 2nd due to the tranny noise being transferred into the cabin, but because you can hear it in neutral there is definitely something wrong. Try changing out your fluids and if that doesn't work it looks like you might need to get a rebuild done of your tcase.

had a very similar sound when i bought my IX at 48k miles 2 years back.. i thought it was normal and it only made this sound coastin in 5th 45mph+ and when i did my 60k service it went away! i never thought much of it but im at 105k miles (i flush my tranny, rear diff, and tcase fluids every 15k since the 60k) and since that day have not heard it come back. hopefully your problem is minor like mine!

 

glad i bought my car with it built already.. sounds scary when driving down the road!
