Quick Rant

Universal EVO truths:
Fast = True
Handles = True
Fun = True
MPG = meh
Idle with AC ON = FALSE!!!!!

I've tried everything short of setting the idle to 1500 (Currently at 11xx)... new shaft seals, boost leak verified flashed back to stock (only set inj scaling) NOTHING will get this thing to stop stalling after going into neutral on a hot day with the AC on.

2.3, Exedy HD Twin, HKS272 (Are there oldschool and newschool 272's now?)

It's been stalling sense I did the clutch. It was ok with just the 2.3 and cams. I'm about ready to sell it.

why dont you tune it? your tuner can adjust your idle or you can using evo scan..

There is a specific table that you can tune to help with the stalling. Mine used to do it all the time and then I was able to fix it. I will post it up later when I get home.

I have had the same exact problem since Ive done the clutch 2 years ago. Thinking it was the tune I scheduled a tune with Sean ivy last year and nothing. Sean worked on it and managed to fix it to where it doesn't stall all the time but no luck on fixing the problem for good. I've been researching this ever since and I've narrowed it down to the ICS,TPS, or just a dirty throttle body. Today I replaced the ICS and cleaned the throttle body while I was at it, I haven't been out on a normal drive but I did take it out for a test drive and I did not stall at all. I have noticed that the rev is slightly higher but not really noticeable. I hope that was the fix because it's been too hot to ride without ac.

So I have updates to the Idle issues...

I had a reputable mail tuner look at it. After a few back and forth maps He ended up diagnosing it as a faulty Idle Air Controller OR a poorly adjusted BISS.

I replaced my IAC and adjusted the BISS with the IAC actuator on. Still didn't improve things.

Then I started fooling with the tune myself some more (I was self-tuend up until this issue) I did some drastic stuff like setting every idle value to the same, Messed with the Idle stepper table one increment at a time 'till it started bouncing idle.

The car idles fine when it's not moving. ONLY when in motion does it really have problems so I got a wild hair a blew on the filter. (I've got a buschur cone filter on there) The car stumbled just like it does when I'm driving... I can't blow on the filter as hard as wind moves around in the bay. (I have the hood louvers removed)

Having done the "Blow on the filter test" I made a little filter isolation box out of cardboard. That seemed to improve the idle. Before I went and made it out of alluminum I decided to put the factory airbox back in and BAM Car idles fine.

I think I'm just going to drill some holes in the lid and sell the car. I've been considering selling it for a long time. I've got pretty much everything replaced but it's been a sour time with the car overall. (Engine rebuild, trans/transfercase rebuild all because the previous owner did NO maintenance whatsoever)

Fixed, because, rebuilding the car to one's own specifications must mean that all factory accessories function as intended.

If you are still having trouble send me your rom and I will take a look at it.

I was able to help someone else by bumping up idle timing btwn 500-1500 rpm and up to 50 load. His car seemed to like it at 11* idle timing in those areas. I slowly raised it after making the following changes. I also raised the idle rpm to 952 or so when the a/c is on in neutral. Then bumped iscv steps with a/c on in neutral at engine temp 77 and 82 degrees up... 77* to 80 steps and 82* to 70 steps. Are you using the tephra mods?

My car dies every once in awhile when I have the ac on too. I have learned to just shut it off everytime I come to a stop, its annoying.

How about my little issue today, car sat outside, it rained for about an hr, went to drive home, the damn thing missed, stutterd, bucked etc for the first 10min of driving.............................Damn cars

I remember having AEM and heavily modded STI, trying to dial in AC on that was such a PITA! Good luck to you with yours, and I hope my Evo wont be as bad.

I'd go with a bad compressor also.

I doubt it, I remember how I lusted for stock ECU and having a properly, non-stalling working A/C, it never happened so I just got rid of the A/C

Ya it was better for a while but the "Solved" was a false alarm... I think once the car "Learned" the new idle settings for the different intake it started stalling again.

For those of you getting mad that I'm saying negative things about the car it's mostly tounge in cheek. This ain't my first rodeo.

Thanks mt057 for the constructive post. I'll give those things a shot. I have just started reverting to the stock injector scaled MAP every time I try something different so I'll go in the direction you suggest. I had fooled with the timing but I didn't go past 8 degrees because If I remember right that is almost double stock timing in those areas.

I'll let you know how it comes out. In a way I'm glad. The stock airbox really sucks.

What's the point of this statement? If I was the ONLY person who had similar issues I would assume it's my "Rubbish" car. It's not, it's a super common problem that MANY in the Evo community have attempted to address with varying degrees of success.
