After 2.5 years, thinking of selling up...

Hey guys,

Don't post often, but I kind need to get my faith in Evos restored...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way the car drives or handles. I've taken it on the track a fair few times and I love the way you can turn in with no fuss and just point and shoot. I love the mid-corner adjustability. I've only ever been caught out because I was going into a bunch of S'es in the wrong gear. Brakes fade too fast on track, but I just got different pads, so it might be better now.

My car's only got a few basic mods, but I'm more than happy with the straightline speed. I don't mind the hard ride and usually neither do my passengers.

No, what's getting to me is that, constantly, one thing or another is breaking or going wrong.

To boil it down, I got it in good shape at around 17,000 miles, it's now at 33,000, though that should probably read closer to 50,000 as it's often stuck in traffic. Following is all the **** I've had to replace:

- Passenger seatbelt $400
- Power steering pump $300 (off e-bay, lucky find)
- Radiator $300
- Exhaust manifold $300
- Front mudguards $150
- Clutch replacement $1000 (engine & gearbox removal + part)
- Two rear and one front suspension strut replacement $1500 (really ouch..)
- Various leaky hoses/pipes needing replacement $300
- Non-regular belt + pulley replacement $300

And that's without the very regular maintenance requirements of frequent oil changes, cleaning the injectors, replacing belts, gearbox oil etc. etc. and none of this includes any crash damage.

Even now, there's still stuff wrong with it. There's a wobble in the gearbox that manifests itself when I drive in the rain too long and the wastegate doesn't always close properly. Result is I avoid driving at normal speed in the rain and don't feel comfortable going long distances from where I can get it fixed.

Maybe this is normal, maybe I'm unlucky. Or it could be that all the **** it has to deal with from Chinese traffic and some bad roads has made it this way. Hasn't been tracked more than 4 times or so.

I know they're more expensive, but I just find myself coveting my neighbor's M3, 911 or GTR as they do seem to be stuck together quite a bit better.

No ****, I would keep this car for 10 years if it would just work without something new going wrong every month. Is this normal?

I've almost sold my Evo at least half a dozen times since I bought it back in 2004. Then I get a new mod and fall back in love!

M3, 911, GT-R......different animals, likely with their own problems.

I dont understand. You want to move up in the food chain but you seem to be very conscious of maintenance / repair costs

Just for fun. Here will be the repair costs on your GTR/911

Passenger seatbelt $900 ($400)
- Power steering pump$700 ($300 (off e-bay, lucky find)
- Radiator $1500 ($300)
- Exhaust manifold $1200 ($300)
- Front mudguards $300 ($150)
- Clutch replacement $3000.00($1000 (engine & gearbox removal + part)
- Two rear and one front suspension strut replacement$4000.00 ($1500 (really ouch..)
- Various leaky hoses/pipes needing replacement $600.00 ($300)
- Non-regular belt + pulley replacement $900.00 ($300)

To me it looks like most of these items are "wear items" that would happen with any car. It's a daily driven car that goes through stop and go traffic...

In general, the parts for the Evo are pretty cheap...compared to cars that offer the same level of performance. I'm kinda scratching my head on the $1500 shock replacement. Sounds like you maybe purchased OEM through a dealer?

Another thing to consider is you purchased the car used...so you really don't know what kind of life it lived before you took ownership. But like Solenoid said, if you're crying about the repair bills now...wait until you have to replace something on an M3.

Yeah, if you think those costs are bad, try repairs on an M3 or GT-R. From what I've been told, M3s also break a LOT. One of my buddies is a BMW mechanic and has endless horror stories.

I think you are just unlucky with your evo. I've got 56k on my evo IX dedicated track car pushing 291whp on the original clutch. I've never had to replace a single part on the car due to mileage.

cars break. and the faster the car is, the more it will break. Just be happy you aren't paying the expensive costs of an M3 or GT-R

Dude your moving up to advance cars which parts would be more expensive and harder to find a better price and that's if something breaks

I have been trying to get an Evo for nearly 4 years and I finally got one I don't care if something breaks on it because it's my dream car, not only that everyone waves at me when they have a similar car, look at my turbo thread and see how much crap the Evo guys give the lancer guys. I plan on keeping my Evo for a long time I think you should too

You and the OP either don't know how to drive or are very unlucky. Or you complain about replacing normal wear parts and don't believe in maintenance. These cars are actually quite reliable if you are good to it. Performance cars cost money to run, if you don't like that, buy a Prius Like everyone else here has said, any part on a GTR or M3 is going to cost a lot more to replace.

Or better yet an old Ford Falcon those things will last you 1,000,000 miles doing regular maintenace....jk, my brother had an 04 325i and just to replace the steering rack(reman) and the power steering pump $1,300 I cant imagine something like that happening on an M3 or GT-R. Look at some regular maintenance on a GT-R $4,000 for tires, $3,600 for brake pads ad rotors and $250 fon an oil change.

Evo's seem to be hit or miss. Even relatively unmolested ones.
