Smile 1-3-5 Gas Saving Trick

Most of us know that staying off boost is a way to save gas when driving an Evo. I tried and failed to stay off boost for extended periods of time until I came across this tip on the July 2012 issue of Car and Driver magazine, page 66 (Five mileage tips for efficiency enthusiasts), tip number 5: Skip gears in town - paraphrasing: "try shifting from first to third and then from third to top gear when accelerating around town." It took a little getting used to for a day or two, but now I do it out of habit. For the last two weeks my Evo 9's mileage has been 22 mpg (all city/suburb driving). Previously it was 20 mpg. Try it and let me know whether this driving technique works for you!

I've tried that occasionally but I'm not convienced it does much, as metioned above staying out of boost is the best way to save gas.

I think that's exactly why it works. It forces you to stay off boost by using higher gears. If this keeps up, I'll save $200/year on gas, fully justifying the $8 I spend on my yearly subscription to Car and Driver!

Just use the open/closed loop load changes to get some better gas mileage. That and stay out of boost works well too.

You can also do this by shifting earlier.

I'll give it a shot. So far I have tried the following:

-Shifting no higher than2500 rpms
-Shifting at 2000 rpms
-Shifting at 1800 rpms
-Shifting at 1500 rpms lower gears, 1800 higher gears mix (not fun at all)
-Light throttle acceleration (takes longer to get to speed)
-Harder throttle acceleration (idea that less time spent on accelerating)

So far best results are very light acceleration. Shifting point around 2200-2500 rpms cruising rpms around 1500-2200 rpms depending on speed.

I get 22-23mpg's without using the 1-3-5 technique. Its all in how you drive the car. I am not worried about people riding my *** for taking off slower than other cars. I stay completely off boost keeping low vacs on the boost gauge. I like to shift all my gears, as its easier to tell if there is an issue starting or happening.

personal best is 29mpg, and my gf hates it. she gets so mad that i drive a 25psi boosted sports car like an old woman. i keep vac from 4-18 while driving, rarely ever going boost side unless i have to merging into traffic or getting around someone.
