What makes a car collectible doesn't always follow rational rules. Also the same could be said about the NA Miata, it's still a benchmark, yet would you call it collectible based on used car prices?

Like I said, no one knows and time will tell. You can come up with reasons why any performance car should rightfully be collectible, and people do on every performance car forum on the internet. Pontiac GTOs, Fiat Abarths, BMW M3, S2000, MR2 Spyder, Lotus, Camaro SS, BRZ/FRS, AMG cars.

They can't all be right.
+1 I concur

I can only go off my evo. Purchased from dealership in November for 14K and now I can sell it private party for 14K according to KBB. So looks like the value has gone up.

I think almost every car after 2000 is too mass produced to be collectible. Only things that will fetch a good price down the line is low milage and rare colors thats about it

Out of everyone's opinions i don't think it will go up to high in resale price. Any way, This was my first car i ever bought and was my dream car ever since i was 14. I have had the car for 3 years and will pay it off in 2! To be honest, I don't think i will ever sell this car, It has treated me so good and i wouldn't take any offer for it. Plus i don't think i could re sell it for much anyway because it already has like 120,00 miles lol..

I can see the immediate value of them holding for a while but eventually they'll all go down except for your rare low mile, stock ones.

As they get older and resold more and more, the prices go down eventually it'll get to where you can buy an evo8 for cheap

How much would you play for a 2003 evo with 200k miles, 5 owners and the usual wear and tear, and has been obviously modded but with mods that amount to nothing more than saying the previous owners were hard on it? I'd pay maybe 5-7k for it today...

For the record. Talking about the resale of a car is like pissing in the wind.

Its kinda useless.

Yup seems about what one would want to pay/get for said car for sure, but like I said above my car may be worth 8k on a good day, blue bird sky, with a tail wind. but 30k cash couldn't buy it so...

Hell a trade straight up for a $37K GSR wouldn't get it done either.

Went into a dealer the other day again, just to see if they had a bolt in stock since I was passing by (They didn't). On way out staring at a line of X's that have been at this dealer for months and months.

Dealer: So you looking to trade up to the X
Me: Trade up not hardly, Just looking to see if they had a part in
Dealer: See if you buy the new one you don't have to worry with a full warranty
Me: I would not straight trade you this car for any of the umpteen EVO's you have sitting here
Dealer: "Dumbfounded" he put out his cigarette and walked back inside

Agreed.

Absolutely. Can you keep an Evo for cheap, though? Not really. As such, many of the cars' time is limited leaving the few better examples in a number of years, as you imply.

We're already seeing the delineation in pricing. Pristine, low-mileage examples are selling for twice as much (or more) as heavily used cars. The question then becomes, does the gap remain the same or does it grow wider in time?

That's not exactly a unique attribute to Evos. According to KBB a Camry with 5k miles is worth double a Camry with 100k miles.

Also are we talking about general depreciation compared to other cars, or are we talking about hermetically sealed 0 mileage "collector" car examples?

I agree with this and like what has been said. The high mileage beat on 5 owner cars will ultimately depreciate but the pristine low mileage ones will hold their value simply because people like us on this forum will be willing to pay for a quality car because they grew up with them

Its funny to read this thread.

The resale $ amount is only as good as what someone will actually pay for it. NADA, KBB and outfits like that are only a benchmark if you ask me. I had to hagle my IX down from $24.5 to $21k since I just wasnt going to pay that much. The seller kept telling me the blue book value blah blah blah... It only matters what Im willing to pay.

When the time comes, would the average Joe pay $20k for a 20 year old Mitsubishi? No. Would enthusiasts like us, maybe.

Besides Evos have twenty year history in the world market. You can get a 1992 Lancer Evo for pretty cheap.

This thread really reads like wishful thinking. You guys should check out other car forums, everybody thinks the same thing. Their car is going to be the one that's classic. Everyone from S2000 owners, to MR2 Spyder owners, even Fiat owners

No one really knows, but I think looking at Mitsubishi's previous AWD turbocharged cars can give you a reasonable estimate. Evo 8 values are showing that this car isn't the next NSX/Supra in terms of resale value.
This guy needs to go back to his Honda forum. Again comparing evos to S2000's, 3000gt's and early model evo's not even sold here in the states.

These cars will hold some Value over other cars,
Here are a few Examples,

SUV- Nissan rogue 2010, AWD decked out leather- $35k after all said and done
Resale value right now MAYBE 17k Private party 14k Trade in

2005 toyota solara SE [basic family ride] $31k After all said and done
Resale value 5-8k What a loss.

06 Mazda speed 6 [ultra Rare cars only made for two years 06,07]
MSRP After all said and done [taxes tittle all the BS] $32k-35k depending on the extras
Resale Value right now 12k [on average of 12k miles per year]

2010 Camaro 2ss RS [not rare by any means, lots of power thou american made in canada mine was number 92,134 off the assembly line so that gives you idea od how many were made]
MSRP after everything all said and done, $44,000 [I have a actual invoice form when i got mine, with a lil bit of extras, Exhaust, stripes, RS package]
Resale price - $MAYBE $25,000 high side.

2006 Evo IX [only made in us one year] MSRP after all the BS $33,000-35 depending on what u get in it.
Resale value $18-25k If its clean and always has been stock, not beaten on you could prolly get more

Also, look at the price of the most in demand supras, Twin turbo, 6 speeds, you wont touch a Clean low miled one for under $30,000 and up.

NOw this is based off prices here in my local area, with taxes and all the other crap they add in, which you have to take into account anyway when u get a car.

NOW i dont know about you guys, but looking at these figures its pretty easy to see what is holding value here.
Look at the New mustangs 5.0, in 10 years you could prolly get one for MAYBE 5k cause here the older 2002 and down sell for that or LESS now.
so take into account, whats out there and what resale values are id say the Evolution is pretty Decent for a resale value, looking at other cars.
Also trade in and private party values as we all know will vary by a few thousand, these are going off Trade in values and what has sold around here in chicago, with average 12k mile years. Also ive owned and sold, some of these cars myself.
