30psi on stock? corporate car?? Hello!

Hello everyone,

I feel a little guilty as my first posting is a question, however, let me quickly introduce myself.

My name is Petar. I have owned and modified a few cars, mostly Hondas.

OK, let me get to this question, that I am sure some of you lads can answer and give me a little insight.

I have located a 2006 Evo9. Test drove it last night. Here is the question :

The car only has an aftermarket intake & boost controller. When I drove it the boost was spiking at 30psi! I guess someone might have meesed with it and didnt know what they were doing, especially on pump.

Also, the carfax informs me that it had 2 owners. First owner is listed as "corporate" and had the car till it hit 50k, records show oil changes and regular maintenance. From than on in the period of 9 months there are no records! The car has 75k now.

Could this have been a rental car? Only an intake and boost controller, was someone looking for an easy hp gain? Or did the dealer turn up the boost to help make his sale? I think it is a clear indicator that someone was pushing this car too much.

"corporate" here probably means that the first owner bought it through his business. I highly doubt it was a rental. 2nd owner probably did his own maintenance. I don't see a dealer installing intake and boost controller to sell an otherwise stock car, it doesn't make sense. I wouldn't be worried about 30 psi if everything else checks out. Personally I'd turn it down a notch if I bought the car. EVO is built to be driven hard, you probably can't find a IX that hasn't been abused at least a little.

sounds like previous owner was running E85. Verify injectors size, was the uicp taped? and map switches in the cabin? look for excessive wear under the hood by radiator(radiator wear could indicate turbo swaps).

No signs on the radiator to indicate a turbo swap. Turbo looks stock as well as the radiator. It just seem a little strange to me to have only an intake and a boost controller...not even a fuel rail.

The e85 slipped my mind, you have a very good point sir!

This is why out of the 3 evos iv owned in my life I have never purchased from a dealer used. You never know what a dealer will do to cover something up just to make a sale. That car should def not be spiking 30 psi if it's on pump 93. Was there a wide band? Checking the air fuels is key also like another member said injector size. It is possible the car is on e85 but that should be further looked into. Good luck

Also if you are looking for an Evo I have purchased 2 through Evo m. I have to say both my cars were everything the previous owners had said they are. There are some really honest people that sell through Evo m. Bump for them. Maybe Something to think about if looking into evos.

I would highly, HIGHLY recommend investing in ECUFLASH and evoscan. Grab a friends or buy the tactrix cable and log that thing. I'm sure its knocking like hell.... That will give you a great insight of the car. Also take a compression tester with you and do a compression test, that'll give you a good idea of the health of the motor.

I just checked out the software's webpage, it look very helful! I wonder if the dealers allow laptop hook up prior to sale.

Wow that is some high psi, if you do decide to buy it get it reflashed at a dealer back to stock maps, since it has such little mods on it.

Most likely like mentioned before it was purchased by the 1st owner through his business. I have never ever heard of a Evo as a rental car before, let alone manual rental cars lol.

How much is it up for sale for?

Asking 20,900 with 75k on the car. Got it down to 19,500.

Do you think it is a fair deal if I ask 20k final price, including tax,etc...I am putting down 5k, and financing the rest.

If you buy a tactrix cable you can flash a stock map back to the car yourself all you need is your rom i d and also you can tune yourself or have a friend do it for you. It will save a ton of money on tunes and also then there will be no need to have a dealer flash a stock map back on witch I could imagine is pricey

There are better deals on evos out there for 19k. My friend got a built Evo 9 with 19k miles for 20 grand. Flawless car I'd shop around

I agree. I have been in the market for the past 2 months, most of the deals I come across here in TX are pretty bad.

Your friend got a really good deal, wow!

Deals like that don't really come across often as I check the market place quite frequently and don't see many cheap evos come up. The few times there are cheap evos for sale, they usually have issues the seller fails to mention in the ad (put back to stock, rebuilt, engine replaced, tracked, raced, etc.)

Be patient and look around, the deal for the one you're looking at sounds alright. If you can get it to 19 500 for everything in, I would say that is a good deal.
