How to tell if you have cams?

Bought my Evo 2 months ago and not sure if it has cams, it doesn't make the lope sound but is there a way to tell the difference between stock cams and aftermarket looking to eventually upgrade to 272s but want to verify before I start replacing parts. My motor came with an Evo 9 turbo so I'm not sure if the owner put them on or not "bought from a private dealer"

Usually you can tell by the sound. But worst case pull your valve cover off

Crank your engine, if it starts and runs you have cams in there.

If you pass this test you can move on to stage 2...

Pull you valve cover and check for numbers to verify if your cams are aftermarket or not.

Hopefully the cam gods have blessed you with some aftermarket goodness!

How about bottom end? Is there a way to inspect to see if it's stock bore, rods, pistons and bearings by pulling the oil pan and using a borescope?

I would say, first, by sound. Second, like others said, remove the valve cover to check. Also, you can sometimes see from removing the oil cap and peeking in with a flashlight (and if you know what you're looking for).

Yes, absolutely. It's usually pretty easy to tell if the internals are aftermarket at least.

Alright cool, I'm finally putting my dd on the road so I can inspect. I'm making too much power for my mods lol. Too much torque, I'd like to know what it has before getting my E85 tune. I've dd'd this Evo for 4 years now "stock", it'll be funny if it turns out to have a 2.4L or something LOL. I didn't know it had a 9 motor and turbo until I took it to STM for a new tcase about a year ago before starting my mods.

most cams are marked. pull the valve cover off and look for brand names, and serial numbers, then search.
