Transfer case or trans noise? Please help!

Hey guys-

Just recently picked up my Evo, it has some mods.. but I dont think they really affect this. I looked to see if it was a heat shield rattling but it is not. When I am on the throttle from 1.5k-3k rpms I can hear it making a whirring noise like a clutch but more metally.

the noise is a metallicy ringing/pinging noise that sounds like it is whirring coming from the drivers side wheel well. Sorry for lack of better words in explaining it.

I cant tell if it is the clutch as it is metally sounding and normally my clutches sound a little more organic and just make a whirring noise.

It makes the pinging sound when I let off the clutch to get the car going, but it is pretty slight, then when I am going it is just a circular metal on metal noise similar to what a wheel bearing would sound like.

It has the ACT HD clutch.

Any suggestions or help would be awesome.

This is the sound it is making but only when I rev it. You can only hear it if you are right by the drivers side wheel. This is a high res mic put right over the tire about 5 inches from the fender, so it may be slightly louder here than in person.

I forgot to mention I have been driving the car like this for about 2 weeks and the sound has not gotten any louder. I need to figure out what this is so I can get it replaced! Would a throwout bearing sound like that?

throw out bearing maybe? are you sure it's drivetrain and not bottom end on the block? Rod knock is generally louder and changes with rpm, but you never know lol.

rod knock you will notice it louder on a cold startup with a clack clack clack similar to piston slap (before seals expand to remove extra room and piston is kinda "wobbly" in the cylinder).

does it elevate with RPM?

No it doesn't elevate with RPms and when it gets moving it turns into more of a whine. I don't think it's rod knock, it's coming from right behind the drivers side wheel. Also, when I disengage the clutch I hear the same noise in the same place but it sounds like a more Metallicy clutch chatter. Ugh

check your trans fluid? this noise could be a lot of things.
Shift forks, sliders, Needle bearings inside the Trans Gears, Races of the needle bearing [unlikly]
TOB, CLutch its self.

My guess would be shift forks/sliders, how many miles on it. and check the trans fluid make sure its clean and leveled off. If a needle bearing snaps cause of low oil it WILL Jamm the gear up in the trans when you are driving.
5 speed or 6? Evo 8 or 9?

It is an Evo 9 with the 6 speed. I will drain the fluid this weekend and check it out. I dont have the know-how to pull the trans so I may just be taking it into the shop
