Are "reusable" drop-in filters truely reusable?

Thinking of going with the cosworth drop-in filter because it doesn't require oiling (I don't want to mess with my MAF), and is listed as reusable. My question is it truely reusable? Or is it resuable a few cycles, and then it must be replaced?

I searched and really didn't find any convincing arguments either way.

Also, I should be safe with no tune with a drop-in correct?

Thanks

I had a cosworth drop in filter. I never knew of a cleaning kit for it, you may just clean it with really low pressure air to blow it out, idk. I replaced it with a oem napa replacement which looked identical in design and pleats except for being white vs. blue. No change in power AT ALL. Lesson learned. I think I payed like $9 for the napa drop in vs. $50+ for the cosworth. Save your money.

I've read that you can clean the cosworth with soap & water. If you can continue to use the cosworth after cleaning then it would be worth it for me.

If not, then I may go the napa filter route. Although, I'm not convinced that the the napa filter gives the same air flow as the cosworth.

Not sure about the Cosworth, but drop-in filters from K&N, Perrin, and AFE are definitely reusable and will last basically forever as long as you clean them properly.

Those are all oil filters, and every thread I read I hear people complaining about them ruining their MAF. It seems to be more of the X guys complaining though.

The cosworth is a dry filter.

If an oil filter "ruined" a MAF the owner did something seriously wrong, like using a gallon of oil on it. I've used oiled filter for over a decade and with proper oiling I've never once found any filter oil residue on the MAF. Research a bit and you'll start to see through all the BS

For starters, you can read everything here: http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm

Well if the Kracka says oil filters are fine, then I guess I should consider them. I was very excited about reading the air filter shootout, although I had read it before. Unfortunately you did not test any filters I was considering.

I'm not going with K&N because I don't trust their filtering. Amsoil & Perrin don't seem to have a drop-in filters. I'm considering Works and Blitz drop-in filters now.

In all honestly, I would much rather a full intake, but I'm really not prepared at the moment to get a tune. I only started thinking about a new filter because my gas mileage seems horrible even though my filter seems clean? I think it's the stock filter from 2006... so it should probably be replaced regardless...

Perrin used to sell drop-in filters for the 8/9, give them a call, maybe they have a few left on closeout. Otherwise, I'm sure you can find a used one.

I run the WORKS drop in filter and I've never had an issue with my MAF.

I just follow the instructions and don't over saturate the media.

This is the napa gold. I dont have pics of the Cosworth piece, but they looked really similar other than color.

If your using the stock airbox still and it hasnt been a restriction in your tune then any drop in filter will be just fine. Its just gonna be a matter of if you want a particular brand name on it or not, they are all gonna filter and flow good. When your pushing more power eventually its the stock airbox itself that becomes a restriction, not the filter.

Depening on how often you clean/replace your air filter you may not see a return on your reusable filter for quite some time. my .02

I used a Perrin filter (cone/dome shaped) that was drenched in oil (purchased from Perrin directly). It made a mess in the engine bay but not a drop or even hint of oil on the MAF.

As far as reusable, I would imagine that even cleanable filters will breakdown at some point. Although that could be like 100k+ miles down the road.

I agree with Kracka that if you oil the K&N in the correct fashion you will not have any problems. However, if you apply too much oil then you may get that oil residue on the MAF. All my cars are fitted with pre-oiled folded cloth filters(3 K&N's, and 1 Works). I have had no problems whatsoever.

I had a blitz, cleaned it a couple times and it seemed to work fine. You can reuse/clean most filters besides the paper ones that companies make. Just make sure not to put too much oil on them and to spread it out evenly on the top.

I now run ARC filters on an ARC intake, but have to clean them fairly regularly with a special foam cleaner since they don't produce them anymore and they run $175 each filter .
