evo 8 shift knob removal?

anyone know how? I thought it was just threaded but it won't budge and I see there is a little black peice below the shift knob so I didn't know if that had to be loosened first.

thanks!

the threads are plastic in the OEM knob. get a hammer/rubber mallet and hit it at medium strength while turning counter clockwise. it should budge after that. the poor mans impact wrench.

I just turned the knob very hard to the left, and it come off rather easily. From reading other peoples' posts on the matter, I was expecting it to be VERY difficult to get get off.

It can be difficult. The black ring attached to the boot sometimes stick glued hard to the bottom of the knob so you need to separate them using a fishing line or floss. Otherwise it's just threaded straight in.
