What are the indents on the keys for?

It's the "button" right in the center of the picture on the key just below the middle groove. It's on both sides, and I've no idea what it is
anyone know what it's used for? i'm thinking it's part of what transmits the immobilizer from the key fob to the car, but i have no idea (or is the immobilizer just a very short-range broadcast?)

on my way home today i noticed that the indents don't quite enter the ignition tumbler, they are just on the outskirts of it so they're not making contact with anything
i'd take one of my keys apart but it involves destroying the key so i'm hoping i can figure out what these are without having to do that...

The immobilizer is a very small chip inside the key head, the ring around the ignition puts out a short range frequency to energize the chip and it transmits it's number, then it all goes from there.

^ This I'm aware of, but that doesn't explain the indents! I'm trying to figure out if they're wired up to the chip at all somehow or if the chip is like a normal key where it's not attached to the "key" part itself at all
