blown headgasket?

so, due to a coolant hose rupture, and overheating, i believe my headgasket is blown due to oil in the coolant, and coolant pushing to the overflow. Looks like Im going to be removing the head, replacing the headgasket and throwing on some better head studs. Any suggestions as to other things I should do while the head is off? this is a daily so the shorter the down time the better. Also what are peoples recommendations for headstuds? Any other possibilties as far as oil in the coolant and coolant pushing to the overflow, other than a blown headgasket? dont think its a cracked block, but i know that also is a possiblity for oil/coolant mix.

The main thing is did you let it overheat when it popped? If you did I would take the head to a machine shop and have them deck it and check it. If not, just make sure to clean both surfaces really well. A razor blade will help with hard gasket materiel. Take your time, torque to spec and have fun.

it overheated, when you you have a big hole and coolant/water pouring out on the highway not much to be done for that.....but pull over, when safe, ......suggestions for headstuds? Arp are pretty standard I was just wondering if there were some special ones out there that had some benefits that the ARP'S didnt? Head and block resurface? anyway to measure the straigtness of both without sending to a machine shop? obviously its not a huge leak otherwise I'd probably be seeing white smoke from burning coolant in the exhaust, but it is pushing to the coolant overflow and there is a small amount of oil in the coolant.

ARP is the beezneez for studs, no reason to go too fancy there looking for something crazy.

may as well do timing belt / water pump while you're in there unless you did it recently or if it's not due for another 20k+ miles

If you can get a strait edge and feeler gauge, you can check the head/block.

The reason you lose the head gasket after an overheating episode is because the head has warped. You can check but it is going to need planed.

If I had mine to do over (I just may) in addition to checking the surface of the head, I would have the machine shop check the block surface too.

When I did my HG I ported the head, exhaust mani and the turbo. I also cleaned up the valves and put MAP springs and new valve seals. For fun I shaved and painted the VC and other fun stuff.
