Evo VIII Using Oil

Hi,

I've had my evo for over a year now and so far the head gasket went not so long ago, I noticed there was water in the oil. However i got the job done and while he was doing the job I got new cam seals and valve seals put in. The technician did a service on it also and put a genuine oil filter and 5W40 full synthetic race oil. After doing the service the oil level was correct at the max mark.

However, I checked my oil level a week or two after just to make sure everything was okay, and found that the oil level went down slightly so i figured that it was just on account of the engine being a bit warm or whatever.

So i decided today to check the oil level and it was down to the min. mark

The engine has lost way too much oil since the time it was serviced There is defiantly no leaks as Ive checked and I do not drive the car very hard.

When on boost the car can give a slight puff of smoke and also lately i feel that it looses a bit of boost for a second at times when I floor it.

Suggestions on where or what is taking or using the oil?????

Cheers!

how many miles are on the turbo? might be time for a rebuild for it, turbos when their dieing will typically spool oil up into the intake and youll burn it

check your intercooler and piping for oil
also check your turbo for excessive shaft play

sounds like when your on boost your loosing/burning oil so im leaning towards your turbo being on its last legs

if those all check out

do an oil change and put the recomended 10w-30 in the motor see if that changes things

before the oil change id do a leak down test and a compression test to see how your rings are holding up

There is 58,000 miles on the turbo, was never replaced before. Yes I get what you mean, I have the same thoughts. I will get a chance tomorrow to check the intercooler piping and I will also check the shaft play on the turbo.

If it was the turbo that was dieing, would you recommend getting my turbo reconditioned or getting an upgrade turbo that will directly bolt on?

The car is the fq300 and putting out about 340bhp with an ecu upgrade.

Cheers.

seems like fp green, red, and black turbos are popular choices these days

your current hsp numbers are fine for the stock 8 turbo

and like the other guy said check your coolant for oil and vis versa because there are cooling hoses and oil lines going to the turbo, and the seal in it can fail and start mixing the fluids which = big problems so take a look at that possibility as well

Ok guys I have done a few check on my car over the past few days. Ive found that there seems to be no oil in my coolant and no coolant in my oil.

I have also checked my intercooler piping and everything seems ok there, however ive found that there is play in the shaft on the turbo.

So from all the things i have checked myself I feel nearly certain now that its the turbo causing the car to lose oil, would you agree?

Cheers for the responses!

ok so theres no oil in the intercooler? and intercooler pipes? if that is the case then the turbo is not spooling up the oil in the intake air and thus not causing your oil consumption problem

every turbo will have some shaft play once used. side to side isnt a bad thing as long as its minimal, the in and out shaft play is bad, that means the seals are going and or shot.

Heres my .02 cents, take the bumper cover off, and unbolt that intercooler and tip it sideways and see if it gives you an oil bath, if you tip that thing sideways and you dont get any oil coming out of it then your turbo is not bad,,

had a buddy who tiped his sideways and about 2 quarts came out of it, i wouldnt expect yours to be that drastic but thats an example

once you do that you can then rule the turbo out

after that id be looking at a compression test, if your numbers are all consistant and within 5% of each other and in the recomended spec ( not sure what that is with our motors, i came from dsms so look it up ) then your rings are not to blame

next would be a leak down test, a simple search can show you how to do that

at this point after those tests your basically looking at if its rings or valve guides, so back to basics and if your on acceleration and your blowing smoke, then its a ring, if your on deceleration at a higher rpm ( which would likely rear its ugly head ) then its a leaky valve guide

I didnt get it up on a ramp yet but I will be off tomorrow and the day after so I have booked in with my usual mecahic (not the one that did the head gasket) to get this problem checked. So we will do what you explained with the intercooler and see what happens.

Thanks for the info, I will post back when I have more info

Found out what is causing it to use oil........the turbo as suspected!

I am going to try and get an evo 9 turbo for it if I can find one at the right price.

Anyone know any good websites? But they must ship to Europe.

check out forced performance's website. they sell modified stock turbos (like 71HTA i think) at an awesome price. better than stock, with 0 downfalls. i'm not referencing the BB turbos liek green, red, black etc...

How did you figure out that it was in fact the turbo?

The mechanic did most of the checking but we checked the spark plugs first, found that they looked good and they werent burning oil. Next we did a compression test and found that all four cylinders were giving excellent readings. Then we checked the intercoller piping and found it was oily. From there we checked the shaft in the turbo and found there was excess play!

Then to be double sure we put everything back and we test drove it while one of us observed the car from behind and saw that on boost there was blue/black smoke.
