Evo 8 A/C Problem
Evo 8 A/C Problem
Hey all,
I was out last night driving my evo and I came to a kerbside stop to park my car. I usually wait 30s-1min before I turn the engine off for the turbo to cool down. All I remember was turning the A/C on and then turning the car off after 3 seconds of it being on.
Later in the night, I turned my car on and started driving. It got a little warm so I turned on my A/C and nothing happened; fans work but no cold air. I toggled all the settings by changing it to the coldest temp, turning the fan to full blast, pressing down the A/C button on/off (the light comes on btw) but all I got was a blast of warm air.
I did some snooping around today to get the problem fixed by myself. Mind you, I've only owned an evo for a month now. I can confirm that when I turn the A/C on, there is no engagement of the A/C compressor.
I removed the plastic cover under my steering wheel to get to the fuse box (why have they made it so inconvenient for accessibility?) and used my voltmeter to run a test on all the fuses (on both pins).
I found this diagram on another thread in these forums:
(source: here)
All the fuses worked except for #6 in the pic (not sure what that one's for). I suspect the 30A fuse (#19) is the A/C one and I can confirm that worked. Just to make sure, I resat the fuse.
I also tried to look for the relay for the A/C. I've looked up in these forums but I couldn't find the help I needed. I popped the bonnet open, opened the relay box and found this:

Why is there no A/C relay? or am I looking in the wrong place? The A/C has worked perfectly fine in the past and my car's done <50,000 kms.
Also, I'm not sure if the following shot of the A/C compressor would help:

I think that's the compressor with the black wire sitting on top of it. The unit directly above it is the power steering motor (right?).
Would appreciate any help and guidance I can get to fix this issue.
Thanks

This is a common problem with the Evos.
1st, your AC relay is there. it's the lowest in your picture.
The compressor clutch wears away. There is a HUGE thread on here about how to shim the compressor clutch. It can be done with the AC compressor in the car with basic hand tools.
Do a search for "AC not working" or "clutch not engaging" and I am sure you will find it.

I found this: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ng-advice.html
Will look into it. I'm just shocked that it can go from working all fine to just dead :/ Thanks for referring me on. There was a bit inside me that was doubtful of anything more serious than just a relay issue.
