Drag Racing setup with street drivability?
Drag Racing setup with street drivability?
Hello I have been lurking EvoM for nearly half a year now and I have some questions, I hope this thread is in the right place (If not can someone please move me to the correct section)

First off I am coming from a fully built CRX build, sleeved 2.0L/ ported head PTE bilet 5858 (400whp/320ft lbs) 16psi. It was fun full boost at 3800rpm 4th gear, but I wanted more down low (hondas make **** torque) and always wished I had gone twinscroll. I just wanted to give a little info on my backround so everyone is clear what I am referencing for lag.
Currently I am on a IX turbo (Evo 8) and it pulls hard for its size but I plan to make 600whp+ and this turbo by far will not get me there
. I plan to eventually go with a built block and I want something that revs to the moon 9K plus++ if need be.
My questions are, since I do intend on going built (block, head, tranny, transfer case) as they fatigue should I skip the fp black, ef4 and go with something that flows a bit more (note: I will be on the stock block for a while) 6266, hta 3586, etc from the start. I am the kind of guy that hates to buy something twice and I feel like I have my IX turbo to push first that will buy me time for now. Or do you guys think the fp black stock frame setups will get me 600whp no problem and that is the direction I should go.
My biggest concerns are that I see a lot of the big boys going from fp red, black setups and going bigger and I would hate to think I would be one of those guys down the road.
Please if anyone can give me real world advice and guidance it wold be very much appreciated. Remember Im looking for a turbo that can flow bigger numbers but full boost at 5k+ is not what I am really wanting to do

So, you moved from a honda 2.0 to a mitsu 2.0 and want more torque...
No turbo that makes over 600 is going to have lots of torque.
Pick one: low end torque or top end horsepower.

I assume this is on E85 or race gas?? Its pretty hard to get there on pump unless you go with a really large turbo (its been done, just saying its not easy). And you'll loose all of your down low power......my winter beater 02 civic SIR has more jam down low then my evo lol.
I had the same question when I built mine. I built a 2.3 with AMS vband 6466. Made 632 hp/534tq on 34psi on a mustang dyno. This turbo has more in it.
I sometime want to go back to a stock frame turbo just for low end power, its more fun for dd
If you want more lowend I'd stick with a fp red or black. The black will get you right over the 600hp mark with the right supporting mods.

Lag is overrated. I have a buddy that a journal bearing 6262 and he is making over 600 on pump and his car moves out. From a stop light and while cruising on the highway.
My car on a 6265 and a 2.4 rolled like a fast honda off boost and a raped ape on boost.

I was thinking of going that route myself, you read my mind. I have plenty of money on tap currently roughly $9k saved from crx partout but I want to spend it right and slowly. The last thing I want to do is jump into something I might regret. Firstly I want to push the stock block a bit, no point in upgrading when I am no where near making 450ft lbs on a mustang dyno as we speak. I know the tuner can bleed the torque to preserve my stock block for a good while (knock on wood)
My 5th gear has a slight 3k+ grind so I wanted to go with a built tranny sooner than later, ultimate drag gear ratio of course. Thankyou all to have posted with ideas, I take everything into consideration. I really wan the ability to rev high to get into the efficiency of these larger turbos but I also know rpm kill main bearings fast...so that is my other main issue. i hear that these 4g64 motors have alot of sideload on the cylinder walls (thats just the word on the street locally) Idk... decisions decisions
ive seen what those setups can do and they do look awesome for the street/auto x but it wouldnt produce enough power for a drag setup. i think 450whp on e85 is pushing it.
im looking to produce more than 500whp (mustang) on 91 pump so i need something much bigger. i know the powerband im going to have on the stock block isnt going to be the greatest but its temporary (who knows how long) afterall stock block builds are just to buy you time/ prepare you for built setup
