newbie questions on gas for evo

hey guys. I am new to this forum, and this is only my 2nd post. I am, for all intensive purposes, a newbie when it comes to tuning and whatnot. I like this forum alot, but I am still learning, and doing it slowly.

I have some questions/concerns that I think would have been asked before, but probably never in the same post, and its something I am wondering.

I plan to buy an Evo 7 next year, and assuming it will be close to euro spec, I am wondering these things:

1. What will be the result of running 93 octane fuel? Engine knock? Lowered performance? 93 octane is the highest easily-accessable octane around here.

2. What would be the stock gas mileage in gallons that the evo gets? I think I read 13 mpg once. Is that accurate?

3. Would intake/exhaust mods increase that by alot? What others would?

4. If I had a boost controller, would it be possible to turn boost way down or off, to make the car run without use of the turbo? This would give decent mileage, wouldn't it?

Sorry for so many questions. I always read the posts here, but never post, so I guess I saved all my questions up for short bursts

Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

don't get me wrong. i dont mind paying it if i have to, but i'd like to look at a few options for saving gas. i live in the city, and i wont be flying around all the time. if its possible to conserve when i need to, thats what i was hoping for.

well, that still leaves the problem of whether or not 93 octane is good enough to run on. if i cant run on 93, i am screwed. i have no idea where i'd get 100 octane around here.

You can't compare octane ratings between Japan and the US. A 100 rating in Japan is not the same as a 100 rating in the US. A 93 in the US is something like 98 or so in Japan, though I don't know the exact relationship (if there is one).

you will obviously ba able to use 93, since the car is made for the US and most of the gas there is 93 max. Mitsu is not going to bring a car that runs 100 when they know you won't be able to find it anywhere.... hope this makes sense.

Octane is a measurement why it be different there and here. isnt that liek saying 1 inch here isnt 1 inch there its like 2.562656 inches over there.

No. He's absolutely correct. From what I understand octane measures nothing more than how stable the gas is and therefore when it will combust. (Or knock if a low octane gas is used in a high pressure setup). Very brief, very vague, probably very far from correct. Someone will give an explaination in better detail I'm sure.

BTW, I've seen 95 octane in the US before, but it's very rare around here. 92 or 93 is max at most stations nearby.

On the "pike" where all the cars are on for races some gas stations have 103 over here.

They measure the octane in different units. It's like having a certain distance that one person measures as 1 inch and another measures as 2.54 cm. It's still the same distance. The Japanese octane measurements are in RON (or MON) and Americans measure octane in RON/MON (or the other way around, i forget which) because the American way also includes extra information about the gasoline's knock resistance or something else like that I think...

DaTenshi, I've never seen gasoline over 95 in CT and I go up and down the pike a lot, although it's probably because I'm not looking very closely... Nice to know there's someone else from CT here though
