Test Pipes

Anyone out there running a test pipe and not have smelly exhaust fumes?
Example: having a motorcycle officer right behind you at a stop light and not noticing anything out or the ordinary.

Can a GOOD tune with test pipe pass tail pipe emissions (not considering visual inspection)?

I don't think so. I pass emission no problem. It still smells though.

Does your state have tail pipe emissions? I live in California.

If the OP is in California it will NEVER pass with a TP visual or sniffer test.

And yes it is VERY easy to tell if you are behind an Evo with a TP only. They do reek.

I talked to a tuning shop and they informed me that they can make it smell just a LITTLE bit.

So this is total BS then? I have 2 young kids living in my apartment and every time I start it up in the garage it makes the whole garage stinks so bad.

You could always get a test pipe with a high flow cat installed. It won't be as good as the stock cat, but it'll flow better.

If the smog tech checks for serial numbers on the cat, it will fail automatically in CA. BAR is cracking down hard now on after market cats and handing out citations to shops not checking the serial numbers.

WTF??? There are NO numbers on the cat anywhere. Absolute BS there. I just had mine done last month with a HFC no problems.

I just checked my stock cat which is off the car for numbers, and as I stated there are none. Someone is selling you a good story.

Oh and if your car doesn't smell it's running lean NOT GOOD. You do so at your own peril. Mind you at idle it isn't nearly as bad as when you are beating on it.

The guy I bought my evo from sold it because California was giving him such a hard time with a HFC (he moved to Sunnyvale, CA from Texas). So, I'd say good luck trying to pass emissions. If it was just a obd2 scan, then that would be easy to get around with a tune.

You are going to smell with a test pipe. If you don't, you're doing it wrong.

Just switch to a test pipe after emissions inspection. Yes any test pipe will make your exhaust smell like crap. E85 smells a bit better than gas though.

Just hope you don't get pulled over for a random inspection. There is no serial number on the cats. Whoever told you that is retarded. You can even weld a shield on the test pipe to make a little more inconspicuous.

There is no serial numbers on STOCK cat, but aftermarket there is and has to have one.

Please refer to arb.ca.gov (air resource board)

That is the site smog techs go to and punch in serial numbers. If it is not listed for the car, FAILED.

If undercover cars go in with a cat like that and the tech passes it, citation right away. They send you back to school and minimum fine for shop $500. 3rd citation license revoked,so techs will check them if they still want a job.
