Question Mystery bolt

Just removed my turbo and manifold to install some new goodies and I came across this bolt. It doesn't look like it serves any real purpose. Any one know what it's there for?

By way of the timing mark it is possible to align the balance shaft, driven by the oil pump, in two positions only one of which is correct. If you operate the engine with the balance shaft in the wrong position you will encounter a harsh vibration at 4K rpms.

Removal of the bolt allows you, by way of a screwdriver, to tell the position of the balance shaft. I avoid this step by not moving any of the sprockets as the timing belt comes off.

So, yeah, the hole goes through the block.

You don't even have to be that careful..... align the mark on the oil pump gear then twist the gear 90 degrees and let go. If the mark springs back up toward the aligned position you are in phase. If the mark falls down to the bottom your are 360 degrees out of phase and have to spin the gear around once.

**** that bolt lol.

Nope. Like everyone else has already stated, it's to insert a screwdriver to keep the shaft from spinning.
