funky a/c smell

funky a/c smell
Normally I don't believe in a/c, but I was driving a lady with a small baby and I didn't want the baby to get too hot so I turned the a/c on.
The a/c worked the way a/c is supposed to, but when I dropped the woman and baby off and turned off the a/c, I had a sort of refrigerator-type smell coming through my vents.
The smell went away after a while; I tried turning the a/c on again and the smell came back, once I turned the a/c off again. I did this again a few times and the smell seems to be getting weaker but still there.
Any idea what that might be?

Could be.
If it makes any difference, normally, when I am just using the vents I don't get any stink-o. The smell only happens after I use the a/c.
