Looking to buy an Evo 8 - any gotchas?

I'm looking at selling my X and picking up an Evo 8 that's for sale locally. My X has been an absolute nightmare in terms of reliability (sub 30,000KM/3 years and I've already replaced an axle, tcase, and AWC pump under warranty).

In the X forums there are some stickied/popular threads about common issues/fixes that should be done on these cars (FPR hose, AWC pump failures, faulty relays, etc...) but I haven't been able to find anything similar here from poking around... yet.

I know the tcase in the 03 and 04 models are prone to failure if they've taken abuse and I'm familiarizing myself with the death whine so I can know it if/when I hear it. Most of what I've found otherwise has been related to aftermarket or tune issues.

I was hoping some other 8 owners could shed some light on any common issues/gotchas for me!

Thanks!

Thanks Raptord, looking more for common issues than general car buying tips :P More along the lines of the nuances of the X as mentioned in my OP.

Watch for tranny issues. Grinds, whines, etc.

And axles of course. Listen for pops or whines.

Aren't you gonna miss the X? It's years ahead of the 8/9 in technology. I don't think and 8/9 is gonna be any better on reliability. Stuff breaks regardless

This is a good point. Evo 8/9 are not Honda like reliability in the sense of get in and go low maintenance reliability. Maintenance is constant and things break on our cars.
Unless your tired of the X I'd keep it.

light years seems a bit exaggerated. while the evo 10 head flows better, i give the win to the 4g63 for higher toughness and less complicated ecu. transmissions are pretty eqiuvalent. evo 10 electronically controlled rear diff gets the technology win. suspensions are virtually identical.

I didnt say light years, just years. Its a better handling car, its nicer inside and out and the engine has proven itself. Basically what i was saying is no matter what, an evo is an evo and stuff breaks.
