Car list from age 16-27

94 Bonneville SSEI
91 Talon Tsi (started it all)
2000 GTP
2004 Evo VIII (still have, now has a 2.3)
2005 Grand Prix GT
2006 Chevy Duramax (still have)
2006 Evo IX RS (just bought)

Very happy I started with something not so fast, the SSEI was fast enough at 16/17 let alone an Evo. But it all depends on maturity and as you read this I'm sure you think you are but.....more than likely youre not, just the way it is. It terms of maturity and knowledge of LIFE: If I knew what I know now I wouldve been a genius in HS

The first time I drove an Evo I was 17... and it put out 420whp. Let's just say I actually got to experience some real torque for the first time in my life. The car was tuned on 22lbs and water methanol injection. Had the car for the weekend and I honestly considered never giving it back. But Evo's will test your ability as a driver, you really have to learn how to drive them if you are new to them, but you catch on.

Maturity, like others have mentioned is a big test. Now 23 y/o, and owning my first evo, people come up to me all the time in numerous kinds of cars, trying to pull on me or race etc. Most of the time I just ignore them, I'll just be commuting to work and not wanting to risk being a jackass when there's too many cars on the road or get pulled over.

Just keep in mind the car has limits, although they are unique and crafty vehicles they are not invisible.

OH.... and they get horrifying gas mileage if you had that concern, even with a tune and conservative driving. Good luck, I encourage and advice on the subject of buying one, obviously I can't discourage you!

I personally think it would be a bad idea to get one for a first car. Even if you are mature, it's so easy to get into these cars and get into trouble quick.

ill put a word in man...there was a guy on the first page saying something about being mature and I totally agree with him let me add though that you should also be humbled.. im only 23 but my parents raised me to earn and work for the things I want I was never handed anything from my parents without hard work and discipline. I remember being 16.. it was all about lookin "cool" "being the best" and "not caring about anyone around you but yourself".. if you have access to an evo and can afford it then yes you should get it.. just 'DONT' be a D**k lol theres a lot of people or "kids" in your sense that cant afford it so if you get one just be humble about it ...don't flaunt it just enjoy it....AND DONT KILL YOURSELF! hahahahaha

I was raised the same way. Learned to drive standard in Porsche 911 Turbo and started learning when I got my learners permit. Then when I got my license, I was handed a 1997 Toyota Corolla with 1.6L engine attached to a 3-speed automatic transmission from my uncle. WTF is that? And all the kids were teasing me cause they always saw me on the road driving a 911 Turbo only to end up with a Corolla. They were all driving things like Honda S2000s, Acura RSX Type-S, Nissan Silvias, and one kid even got his dads MKIV Toyota Supra Turbo cause the dad went and got himself another one. Its a different feeling when you work to get the car you want and you stay humble and behaved with what you have. Cause those kids ended up in a lot of trouble and the kid with the Supra crashed into a construction zone ditch cause he was a stupid idiot who couldnt drive.

I say dont get the Lancer Evolution as your first car. Get a crappy beater and develop your driving skills from there. Get the Lancer Evolution when your ready. The thing is a pain to maintain and registration and insurance is waaaay worse. Mine is pretty much stock cause thats the way I like it. It only pushes 300WHP, but thats way more than perfect for where I drive my car. I hope you take something away from this and good luck on your journey as a driver.

all cars were bought with hours I put in on the job discipline makes you grateful for what you own and truly makes driving the car more enjoyable to yourself it will give you an attachment to the car that will stick with you forever.

I had the good fortune to be sent to a two week performance/tactical driving school combined with a shooting course before my last deployment. On the first day the lead instructor told us "All males come out of the womb thinking they know how to fight, drive, and screw. We're here to help you with the first two." Unfortunately it's true, everyone THINKS they're an above average (or worse, a SUPERB) driver and very few of us actually are. The issue that so many people here are hitting on is that a performance car allows you to get yourself very quickly into situations you aren't trained/capable of controlling. That said, ANY car is dangerous if you act like an idiot... getting behind the wheel of a two ton vehicle traveling 70+mph is far more dangerous to yourself and others than any weapon you're likely to ever handle. If you respect the car and have a realistic understanding of your as-of-yet practically non-existent driving ability and experience I imagine you'd be alright.

Depends on the person. My parents trusted me with an old turbo saab for a first car ($1700 haha) and I never got a ticket with it, nor have I had a ticket since. Then I had a friend that totaled his first car which was a Ford Ranger, he crashed it racing and had more tickets in High School then I can keep track of. It's not the car, it's the driver.

IMO it's not a good idea. Buy a cheaper car that's easy to fix and cheap to insure. Civics, corollas, golfs ect are all good cars and great to start with. If your buying an Evo you'll want to drive it like an Evo and you'll end up with tickets or worse. Suck it up and buy a cheap ride for a year or so and keep saving money. Go to the bank and get a small loan, buy an Evo and upgrade the **** out of it.
For those who say it doesn't matter if you have high HP or not a 100mph is 100mph......true, but take a 1/4 mile for example and an Evo will be going 110mph for sure and the Civic would be lucky to hit 90mph. 20mph doesn't sound like a lot but quick math puts about a 25% increase in speed.
Even those that can afford a brand new car I think should have to drive a beater as their first car. You learn to take care of it and look for problems that might arise. Nothing like a road trip in a car that might not make it.

Less you have money for insurance/afford the car sure go for it.

Otherwise save your self the money for the first few years of driving

Who says "I'm really irresponsible. Is an Evo a good choice for my first car?"

Then again, I never thought of myself as a particularly skilled fighter or driver.

good point... lol I crashed my first car at 16 trying to clutch kick around a corner at 50mph...I could have killed someone and myself. I would never do that now im just trying to afford my bills and take some ease off by doing a couple 3rd gear pulls in my evo...nothing stupid though. drive something that wouldn't be the end of the world if you crashed it.. if your bitten by the car bug then be patient drive something that you wanna rip around and be a kid in.

but then again don't be dumb.. ha
