What is boost by gear??

So after talking and hearing about this boost by gear stuff……I would like some more knowledge on it. I was talking to a guy who said he ran boost by gear on his evo and each gear has increased amount of boost. So his first and second ran from 8-14 and 3-4 were like 15-20 and his 5th gear had 25psi….is this possible if sooo how do you tune it like that and have it functional

ECU controlled boost, I recommend a Grimmspeed EBCS. You would need to have it tuned obviously. Not sure why he would run such low boost in the lower gears. Usually Honda guys do that for traction issues in the lower gears. But for example you may run 30psi in 4th but 30psi knocks/detonates in 3rd. So with a EBCS you can run different levels of boost according to how your car handles it.

you will need to reflash your computer with a Tephra V7 rom to get gear dependent boost control. With that you will also need a tune etc...

I would assume I would need to replace my evo 9 diverted valve then??? Is the synapse DV good??

The Evo 9 stock DV would be suffice to hold high boost levels. I wouldn't recommend running 30psi due to explination posted above.

No need to run aftermarket imo

Harp12 You would not need to replace your DV, I ran 27psi with it and it didnt leak. The oem DV is great and has zero drive ability issues. I would keep the oem DV until you reach high enough boost levels that cause it to leak. When you reach that point I would recommend the Tial QR.

Whoever you talked to is a complete idiot. There is absolutely no reason to run that low of boost in 1st and 2nd and run your highest boost in 5th.... He must think hes in a fwd/rwd car or thinks hes cool when he tells people about it. I bet that car is a complete turd

Seriously. I love first and second with 20+ psi

Boost for each gear is a lot of work to dial in, but very worth it.

you should run as much boost as traction in that gear will allow.

You can argue there is no need for max boost in 5th gear and certainly not 6th. Its a good way to try and break your transmission for what purpose?
If you are doing mile runs for top speed I can see the point, but generally I only do high load pulls in 1st thru 4th gear.

My 3rd gear runs 28psi on a bbk-full
My 4th gear runs ~26psi due to some knock I get once in a while so I set the boost down a little bit
My 5th gear runs 20-21psi
My 6th gear runs 19psi

Because I'm targeting 28psi as max boost, I allow 1st and 2nd to make as much boost as possible up to 28... right now 1st gear makes ~22 IIRC and 2nd gear makes a solid 24-26psi IIRC.

What i said was an over simplification. "boost" is an extremely relative way of comparing airflow and pretty much every mod will effect airflow at a given boost level. In the context of this question though, usually people will limit boost at low speed because of traction issues (if you are having traction issues). Its also good for preventing overboost in high gear low RPM. I wouldnt limit boost in high gears except for at lower rpm where it will put more stress on the bottom end.
