I know in the B5 audi world, stages indicate the following:
Stock -->
Stage 1: ECU tune or chip --->
Stage 2: Tune and turbo back exhaust --->
Stage 2+ : Tune + Turbo Back exhaust + Meth injection --->
Stage 3- : tune +turbo back exhaust + K04 turbo upgrade from RS4 without proper fueling -->
Stage 3 : tune +turbo back exhaust + K04 turbo upgrade from RS4 with proper fueling -->
Stage 3+ : tune + turbo back + bigger than K04 turbos +proper fueling

Obviously there is some debate when you get into Stage 3 and 3+


As for the original post: I would go with the IX but again we are biased here lol

 

Get an evo 8 is easy to tune but 9 has mivec so is a bit picky

 

i would go with the 05-06 evo they already have a bigger turbo from factory, you have lsd in the front and rear (most ppl dont like it I do). 03-04 have a smaller turbo and only have lsd on the back

 

I wouldnt buy an MR because I enjoy drag racing. Gear box wont handle the abuse.

In an ideal world a 9 RS

But an Evo 9 is fine too.

If the budget doesnt fit s 9 a 2005 is fine and again an RS.

I don't think either generation is a great daily driver, so based purely on performance I'd go with the 9
