Evo needs a tune?

Hi i recently got a 06 mr from a friend in VA, his car has a de-cat exhaust. This was done to it when he purchased it so he doesnt have any idea if the car was tune or not. Heres my problem, i live in NY and i had to put the cat back on to pass inspection, but i am not to sure if i have to get the car retune after putting back the cat on. Or would it be better to just resett the ECU.

Thanks guys, and I am pretty new to this.

Congrats on the purchase. Does the car have any other mods? If its just the cat you are changing, chances are it wont need a retune. You might be leaving a few hp on the table by not re-tuning it but nothing crazy. Resetting the ECU just clears volatile memory and does nothing to the tune.

If it has a 3-port, it had SOME tuning done. If you're unsure, you should look into it yourself or find a reputable Evo shop to check it out.

Can you answer this question for me please? I have some good advice but I need to know if they look under your car in NY or if they just do a plug-in test. Trying to save you money vs taking it into a shop bro.

they do plug it in for a onboard diagnostic and visual too they look under for a cat converter. The converter either has to be oem or CARB certified.

IN NY we do Safety and Safety/Emission since the evo 7 8 9 is from 2003 to 2006 you will have to plug it in for the safety/emission test and it will scan then station computer decides to fail you or pass if everything the way it suppose to be you will pass and some shops do visual inspection some don't

I guess the question is now if i put the cat back on with the check engine light go on. Knowing that it does have some kind of tune mainly for the boost might affect it? Guess i wont know til i get it put back on.

If you didnt have a CEL without it, you wont get one for just putting it back on.

So the car has a de-cat megan racing exhaust, and I am planning to put a oem cat on it. Praying this would pass NYS emissions. Other wise i have to buy a stock exhaust to pass.
