Evo vs 360 Modena

I know you are expecting a standard street racing story by some guy in an Evo claiming to have pulled a Ferrari. This is along those lines but with a twist – I was in the Ferrari.

A little background: The Ferrari is a red 360 Modena with a Tubi race exhaust and no cats. It belongs to a good friend of mine. It has a beautiful exhaust note that can be heard several block away at idle and it positively screams at WOT. My Evo is the car I raced. It is a stock silver 2003 Evolution with about 4000 miles on it.

I was driving the Ferrari, my brother was in my Evo and the guy generous enough to let me drive his car was following a short ways behind in my Caterham. We had just come to a stop at a light on a divided 2 lane highway. I was in the left lane, my Evo in the right. It was predetermined that we would do a roll-on comparison starting in 2nd gear. After the light went green I accelerated to about 35-40mph, shifted to 2nd and waited to we were even. As I heard the boost spool on the Evo I put my foot flat. The throttle response in the Ferrari is something the Evo can only dream of, even so the Evo pulled me by almost 1/2 a car length. I went to red line in second, then through 3rd and into 4th before coming alongside. At this point I was indicating close to 120mph. For safety reasons we both backed off before going much further. It was also obvious that the Ferrari would have the legs on the Evo at speeds any higher but below 100mph the Evo is definitely a match. We repeated this comparison for the next 2 lights with almost identical results.

Mitigating factors:
1) I waited for the Evo to come on boost before getting on it in the Ferrari so the Evo had a slight run on me.
2) I live in Colorado which is just over 5000ft in altitude. This means that the Ferrari is giving up about 100bhp compared to sea level where as the Evo compensates for altitude with the Turbo.

Thanks Harvey from clubwrx.com for the Pic. Harvey's 12.6 Second WRX is to the left (Vishnu Stage 2), my Evo at the back, the Caterham and obviously the Ferrari up front.

Other people underestimate the Evo all the time... I don't think everyone should go out and race a Ferrari, but this is a cool "kill", and a good reminder that under the right conditions, the Evo is as good as virtually any car out there.

Posting the pic was good... no one can call BS!

Wow! I'm surprised a stock evo did so well against the 360, especially since they are running pig rich from the factory.

Stock evo's usually lose from a roll because we run out of breath past 5500 rpms. Interesting............

I took a 348 on PCH in Newport Beach one night... much to his dismay. LOL

Nice post - very interesting how much difference the altitude can make. Humidity is a big factor in power, too. The cooler, drier air is great for the Evo, while the humid, summer air made my car sputter a little last year when I moved to VA.

I love this post, just shows you that EVO's do have a top end and can pull, just have to be under boost. Awesome 360 and a nice WRX your friend has there. The front is unpainted right?

So at sea level would it have still been a match under 100mph?

I wonder what the "break-even" altitude is

Hi,

I know these stories are fun to read and this one is well written. Regardless of the maturity and intent of the participants to ensure safety, this thread is about street racing. Evom has taken a position to neither support nor appear to condone illegal street racing. Thread is closed. Thanks.
