Just becareful and baby it and you should be fine. When I got tcase it was the worse case of deathwine I have ever seen. Im talking so bad that you could hear the gears grinding and it sounded supercharged and low rpms. Drove it that way for about 3 weeks until I was able to get my new one. Don't launch it or do high speed pulls and you should be fine.

Is it worth the risk? Of harming your car, yourself or others on the road? That’s what you need to ask yourself.

I launched, autox'd and tracked my VIII with the death whine over 15k hard miles. Fluid always came out looking like **** but I changed it frequently and it drove fine.

Luck of the draw for sure.

I do however think some people get the "death whine" confused with the loud noise of the evo drive train. Primarily people who have never driven another Evo. I know mine whines in first and second.

Some probably dont realize that its significantly different sound than the drivetrain noises we are used to hearing. Mine is really loud and increases based on mph.

You sure it isnt the transfer case? you know the sound resonates down the driveline to the rear.

Speaking of which i only notice mine whining when i'm on the gas in a higher gear around the 2-4k rpm range. Is this death whine? If I had a loud exhaust that droned I may not even have noticed this. Shep 1st stage tcase.

More than likely not, if it was death whine you would def know it. Mine at 60 mph is so loud i cant hear my stereo, lol. In 5th gear at 40-45 miles an hour even its horrible. The only reason i even put it in 5th gear at such low speeds is because my exhaust is so loud.

Definitely not worth the risk! I had mine go out almost immediately after I heard the whine. If you need one I happen to have a 9 TC with 20k miles on it!

ThAts awesome man, how much? I generally think it would be cheaper just to rebuild and beef up the broken one as what most people sell a replacement for isn't too far from the price I a rebuild.
