Isopropyl Alcohol as a Fuel Instead of Ethanol?
I have access to large quantities of 99% IPA waste. The waste consists mainly of Isopropyl Alcohol and maybe 10 to 15% of an enantiomer of the terpene Limonene. My Evo is currently tuned for E85. From what I can find on the web the energy density is slightly higher than ethanol.
Methanol = 9755 BTU/lb
Ethanol = 12764 BTU/lb
Hexamine (Esbit)= 12926 BTU/lb
Isopropanol = 14220 BTU/lb (assumes complete combustion)
White Gas = 18500 BTU/lb
Butane = 21165 BTU/lb
Propane = 21656 BTU/lb
This means I should be able to push less fuel than Ethanol (assuming a similar mixture). Also from what I dug up IPA is less corrosive than both ethanol and methanol and has an octane rating similar to ethanol (105 -120 range depending on the source).
If its a simple issue of adjusting the fuel trims to lean out the mixture compared to ethanol it will be easy to do. The wildcard is the Limonene. From what I could gather it can be used as a fuel by itself but has a high viscosity. The isomers are claimed to be less viscous and better for fuel use.
So what is the issue that may crop up from attempting this? Do you think its worth trying?The IPA is free for me to use and only comes from a plant extract so no toxins are present.
