Welding Crack Oil Filter Housing a bad idea??

Hey everybody, so the other day when I was screwing in an AMS oil pressure sending line to my oil filter housing and torqued it a little to tight. I ended up cracking the housing right where the adapter screws in... my buddy feels confident that he could weld the crack and I could run it with out issue but im slightly skeptical... what do you guys think? Good idea?

I would say it depends on where the crack is and the equipment your buddy has. I assume he's got a decent tig welder?

Well it certainly could be repaired by a welder. Its really going to depend on the skill level of your friend. I have seen parts that are in terrible shape returned to like new condition by a good welder. I would recommend he do it off the car though.

Ive seen these situations fail more often than succeed. IMO I say just replace the housing.

yes he has a decent tig welder and is somewhat skilled at welding. I trust his opinion... norrmally I would have just bought a new one but I didn't want to wait a week for the part and have my car be down for another week (ive been doing a garage clutch install on it for about 2 months now and just finished it last Thursday) I really just want to drive my evo haha.

think of it this way, having your buddy weld it and now it leaks so now you need to remove the accessory belt, water pump pulley, crank pulley, lower timing cover and finally the housing..

No fun to do it twice

weld both sides if you have access to both inside and outside and check flatness once welding is complete to insure a good seal on the mating surfaces-- Use a piece of glass and some wet/dry sandpaper. GL

Theres a saying, "The cheap route will end up costing you twice as much". But hopefully it works out for ya.
