Air Intake - Silicone Vs alloy pipes.

Hi guys,

please provide your thoughts with the above mentioned suction pipes.

Recently i had been advised that Silicone suction pipes perform better than Alloy suction pipes.

The reason being, the silicone is less prone to heatsoak and that the alloy suction pipes cause vibration, tricking the Engine/ECU in thinking that its Pinging.knocking at high boost levels.
Whether this is true, I'm not sure but i hope someone can shed some light on this.

I currently have an AGP suction pipe (which had been causing dramas for me from day one due to its height/shape for the compatibility with air boxes etc).

replacing an alloy suction pipe to a silicone, to me feels like a downgrade.

All thoughts welcome.

Cheers,

Draw back to silicone: can collaps under boost.
Draw back to metal: reverberation can confuse maf

benefit of silicone for afr/idle is only for evos running maf. sd conversions are better off with a big-*** aluminum intake.

i've not heard of any confirmed cases of collapse for silicone evo intakes. i'm making 535 whp without issue. can't go a whole lot higher than that on maf without giving up substantial power due to maf restriction.

Care to elaborate a little to what you had found?

Yes i am still running the OEM MAF.
i wonder if i was to exhaust header wrap the intake a little, whether it would benefit.

Only reason I could think of that silicone would work better than alloy pipe for an intake is transition of air.
Smother transition = more fluid air movement

Yeah but aside from the weld joint, the internal of the pipe of the alloy ones are pretty smooth?

Silicone hoses cost almost the same as alloy ones I had noticed

I disagree I built an aluminum pipe intake for around $30
